同時進行する二つの物語、「世界の終わり」と「ハードボイルドワンダーランド」、静と動の反対の世界。
どんよりとした雲がたちこめる屋外を見ながら、ベッドの上でこの小説を読んでいたことを思い出す。「世界の終わり」の情景や匂い、ツ~ンとした空気の冷たさがダブってみえる程。

今から思い出すとまるで、夢の中で実際起こった出来事のようなリアルさを感じさせてくれる。村上春樹の作品の中では一番、フィクションの要素が強い作品だが、私にとっては、一番リアルな作品です。

一般に村上春樹の最高傑作と名高い、初の長編ストーリー。「ハードボイルド」な世界と「メルヘン」な世界が行ったりきたりの反復を繰り返すわけだが、ここに来て初めて春樹がしたかったことがはっきり出ているように思われる。他の長編もそうだが、村上春樹という作家は、一つの物語に二つの切り口を提示し、その切り口の無意識下の共同幻想をついている節がある。
最もそれがはっきり出ているのが今作。
ただ、そういうことを抜きにしても、村上春樹の作品は読んでいて面白い。世界の終わりの、あの狂気的なものがまったく感じられない、切なさ、悲しさと言ったらどうだろう。

何かと言えば物知り顔で「春樹なんて」という人もいるが、彼は少なくとも日本に今までいなかった種類の作家であり、その存在価値は大きい。

『世界の終わり』 と 『ハードボイルド・ワンダーランド』という一見何の関わりも無さそうな物語が交互に進行していく。

前半では、『ハードボイルド･･･』 の摩訶不思議な空想科学世界と軽快なテンポのストーリー展開が楽しめるのに対し、『世界の終わり』 は暗く、静かで、退屈であり、読むのが苦痛ですらあった。

ところが一転、後半では 『ハードボイルド･･･』 が最後の一点に向けて収束して行くのに対し、『世界の終わり』 は突如として動き始める。

凍えるような冬の夜の図書館で 「夢読み」 の謎が解き明かされる場面の何と幻想的なことか。

また、門番から逃げるシーンなどは、手に汗握るほどの緊迫感がある。

そして意外な結末に 「なぜ？」 という疑問が残る。

この割り切れなさ、後味の苦さがあとを引き、強く印象に残るのである。

今や 『世界の終わり』 は、私の最もお気に入りの物語となった。
