川端康成の心の内側への旅である。世の中のもの全てを醒めた目でみてしまう者、観察者の悲哀を老人という代弁者に語らせている。川端氏を知りたければ名人などを読むほうが氏をより理解できると思うが、この本には凄いオマケがついている！あとがきである。三島由紀夫氏がこの作品によせて書いている後書きが実に素晴らしい！人を誉めるときはこうすべし！のまさにお手本です。天才二人を楽しめるオイシイ本です。

5.0 out of 5 stars 作者の研ぎ澄まされた感性が光る作品, 2006/6/13
　作者が設定したフィクションは「どんなことがあっても、女性が眠り続けていられること」ただ一点である。それだけで、かくも広がりを持つ世界を創り出すことができるのか。

　芥川龍之介といい、川端康成といい、純文学といいながら大胆な仮説や技巧を用いて、人間の心の奥底をあぶり出してくれる。

　本作においても、「眠れる」美少女たちとの触れ合いをきっかけに過去の記憶をたどっていく形式を取っている。匂いに着目した美少女たちの描写も圧巻であるが、彼女たちは、主人公の過去を思い出すための舞台装置に過ぎない。

雪国で知られる名文句のように、川端の読みどころはやはり感覚に訴えてくる描写にあったように思うが、この「眠れる美女」における風景描写は回想シーンで用いられる個所が何度かあったとはいえ、それほど頻度が高く用いられたわけではない。そこにあるのは老人の悲しみ、懐かしみ、罪の意識、そして破壊衝動だ。これらの起伏に富んだ感情が淡々と綴られ、読者はただその人の意識に恐怖も覚えるとはいえ、死に繋がるのであろう悲しみが、重く感ぜられて良い。こういう空間を作り出す小説は数少ないが、間違いなく傑作にしか生み出せない力である。本作は三島由紀夫が太鼓判を押したことで評価される嫌いが多いようだが、川端ファンの中でもやはりこれが最高だと評す人も多い。

何はともあれお勧めです。こういう感覚は日本の小説にしか生み出せ得ない、貴重なものであるのだから。
