「伊豆の踊子」は言わずと知れた名作です。こんど久しぶりに読み返しましたが、やはり「古き良き日本」の情緒がうまく結晶した作品ですね。
ただ今回、より素晴らしいと思ったのは、この本に収録されている「抒情歌」という作品。マイナーで短い作品ですが、川端康成の美意識がどのようなところからやってくるのかを窺い知るには絶好の作品だと思いました。さすがに三島由紀夫の才能を見抜いた人だけあって、これは三島由紀夫が書いたと聞かされたとしても違和感のない作品です。「抒情歌」を読むと、川端康成という人が、変な言い方ですが、「この世ならぬ美を求めた、怪しい変人」だったのだなぁ〜と妙に納得させられてしまいます。「伊豆の踊子」ばかりが有名ですが、「非凡なる変人・川端」といった側面から、もう一度彼の作品を読み直してみたいと感じさせられました。

　大人になって読み直して、一座の人間関係も理解できたし、「私」の立場も飲み込めた。
　学生なのに、回りから「旦那様」と呼ばれるが、社会的地位が全く違うのだ。
　主人公の宿に遊びに来た男と一緒に食事をすれば、当然主人公が支払うのである。もちろん、下心があって一座が主人公と一緒に行動するのではない。しかし、そうすることが当然なのだ。

　主人公は二十歳、踊子は十四歳だがいずれも数え年。川端康成が実際に体験したことを元にしているらしい。
　題は「伊豆の踊子」だが、主人公はあくまでも「私」であり、「私」の知り得ないことは書いてない。その点は映画やテレビとは違う。
　映画は、今回読んだ本に収録されていた「温泉宿」を元にして新たな登場人物を作りだしていたことを知った。

　吉永小百合の出演した映画で、たしか十朱幸代が演じたのは原作にない役だったが、「温泉宿」のお清なのである。

「伊豆の踊子」という題がいい。題名がいいために何度も映像化されているのではないだろうか。

　ほかに、「抒情詩」「禽獣」の二編が収録されているが、正直なところ、読んでもよく理解できない。奥深い情念が渦巻いていて、何かをかいま見ることができそうな気はするのだが、そこに何があるのかは分からなかった。

　三十数年振りの｢伊豆の踊子」であったが、最初に読んだ少年時代にはよく見えなかったものが今になってやっと見えてきた思いがする。

　川端康成の抑制の美は人口に膾炙したこの｢伊豆の踊子｣にも余すところなく表現されている。いや、｢余すところなく表現｣ではあってはならないのだろう。多くをあえて余し、ぎりぎりにまで過剰な表現を抑制することに川端康成の美があり、それを身をもって、しかしそれこそ密やかに訴えているのがこの作品の中の踊子その人である。

　踊子の決して自らは知ることない健気なさと切ない思いが、抑制された叙情として深く胸に刻まれ印象深い。
