　1971年に毎日新聞社から出た画集『山下清の東海道五十三次』の文庫化。新たに甥・山下浩の「叔父・山下清　自由な時間への遁走」、倉本四郎の解説が加えられている。
　放浪の貼り絵画家として知られる山下清が最晩年に手がけた作品。東海道をテーマに55点の絵が収められている。制作途中で体調を崩し、最後の13点は没後に発見されたという、まさに遺作である。
　絵の出来は、正直に言ってもうひとつだと思う。倉本氏が解説で指摘しているように、本来の伸びやかさが感じられない。それなりに綺麗なのだが、まとまってしまっている。
　絵には一枚ごとに山下本人による文章が添えられている。素朴で良い。

「裸の大将」の愛称でおなじみの，山下清の作品が掲載されています。扱われている風景は，タイトルの通り，東海道五十三次。テレビドラマなどで馴染みのある放浪時代の作品ではなく，画家として有名になってからの取材に基づく作品が収められています。
山下清というと，長岡の花火などの貼り絵作品が有名です。でも，この本に収録されているのは，ペン画。失敗の許されない一発描きなだけに，一つ一つの風景が山下清にどのように印象付いていたのかが鮮烈に表れているように思われます。絵だけでなく，紀行文ともエッセイともつかない短文が，各宿場ごとに載っています。こうした文章を眺めていると，山下清の旅に自分も同行して，彼の横でぼーっと景色を眺めているような，そんな気持ちに誘われます。
星を4つとしたのは，見開きの状態で絵が掲載されているため，絵の中央部が見にくいからです。そうはいっても，作品の雰囲気を味わうには充分かとも思いますので，是非手に取ってみてください。内容の質を考えると，実にお買い得な価格だということも付け加えておきます。
