昨年末に立ち読みしたときはピンとこなかったものの、本の帯に20万部と書かれているのを見て、やっと買って読んだ。20万部も売れるのは、それなりの理由があると感じた。
まず、忍城攻防という題材の取り方、丹念な資料の読解、ふだん歴史物には馴染みのない読者層への配慮等々。これが著者にとってこの小説が初作であるとは驚きです。末恐ろしい才能を感じる。

ただ、それらとは表裏をなすことだが、ふだん歴史物時代物、あるいは小説を読み慣れた読者の感想は反対になるような気もしている。そんな点が多々あるけれど、ひとつだけ上げるとすれば、“良くも悪くも映像的すぎる”気がする。小説が、丹念に文章を練り上げて、読者の脳裏に画像を想像させるプロセスが残念ながら、欠落してしまっている。
とくに、前半において、成田氏ゆかりの武将が沢山でてくるところで、それが顕著だ。映画やドラマなどで、役者を使うならばその役者のキャラで視聴者を納得さえられると思うが、小説では無理があるように思う。前半は冗長、退屈であると他のレビュー者が書かれている原因もそこにあると思う。私は、歴史小説もけっこう好きで読んでいるので、とくにその感が強い。
著者は脚本家ということなので、それが特徴なのかも知れない。

ともかく、ふだんは歴史小説など買わない層を大量に取り込んでいるだろうから、それだけでも大変な功績だと思う。著者は、資料をしっかりと読み込み、思想などしっかり持っているらしいので、今後に大いに期待したい。

歴史物が好きな読者は、あまり面白くないと感じるかも知れない。
帯に、モデルや俳優の評が載っているが、それ以上のものではないことは事前に理解した上で、読まれると、がっかりすることもないと思う。

ページを倍増してでも、それぞれのエピソードを掘り下げて書いて欲しかった。
戦は一合戦だけ、領民が慕う理由についても今一納得できない。
キャラクター設定が絶妙なだけに残念です。
同じ題材を用いた「水の城―いまだ落城せず (祥伝社文庫)」の方が
戦いや領民の感情など深く掘り下げて書かれており秀逸です。
２つ対比して読み比べてみると面白いです。

歴史ものに限らず普段小説を読まない人には傑作だろうと思う。
内容･文体･分量ともに時代小説としては簡単な部類だし、
登場人物の造形もストーリーも実に分かりやすく爽快である。

ただ、歴史小説を読み慣れた身にすると、
その単純さに物足りない感じを強く受ける。
作者の素人っぽさも気になる。

すぐに読めて楽しめて、でも心には残らない、そう言う作品。
