萩尾望都を語るには、この「ポーの一族」「トーマの心臓」「１１人いる！」は欠かせない存在である。この３作から彼女の世界が広がってゆく。彼女が鮮やかに描き出す、現代の若者がとっくに失った大切な物を、とくと拝見して欲しい。

　ポーシリーズの中でも私が一番好きなのは、この1巻に収録されている「グレンスミスの日記」です。
　かつてポーの村に迷い込んだグレンスミスはその出来事を日記に綴り、家庭をもって普通の生活をおくりながらも村を探し、何度も日記を読み返す。彼の死後、彼の日記は子孫に読み継がれ、わずかながらも再びエドガーとの接触を果たしたのだった。
「生きていくってことはとてもむずかしいから ただ日を追えばいいのだけれど時にはとてもつらいから
　弱い人たちは とくに弱い人たちは かなうことのない夢を見るんですよ」
　このセリフのシーンではいつも涙を堪えられません。

　「ポーの一族」の素晴らしいところは、不老のバンパネラの悲哀だけでなく、彼らと接触した人間が感じる寂しさや憧れが描かれているところだと思います。そして私たち読者も同じ感慨を覚えることができるところではないでしょうか。
　時の流れ系（？）の話に弱いかたには特にお薦めします。

ヴァンパネラとなり、不老不死となってしまった少年エドガー。
彼の生きる時間はあまりに長く、この作品は
ヴァンパネラになる前の話。
ヴァンパネラになった後の話を、
ところどころで時間軸を飛ばし…時を越えたり過去に戻ったりで…描かれている。

永遠に少年の姿のままで旅を続ける少年、少女達。
二百年もの長い年月を生きながら、出会いと別れを繰り返していく。
そして最後には、彼に魅入られた人々が謎を明かそうとする。
時を越えて存在した少年。
人間の一生という短い時間を越えて、読んでいる自らも時を越えられる気がする作品でした。
