光の帝国、常野物語の第2弾。
普通の人が持っていない特殊な能力を持つ一族、常野。
その中で、今回は一人の人の人生を『しまう』ことを仕事にしている春田一家と、彼らを受け入れる大地主一家とそこに集うの人々をめぐるお話。
今回は、不思議な家族より、大地主の末娘、聡子のお話が中心。彼女は、病弱ではあるが聡明で美しい少女であった。戦前の穏やかな日本の古き良き時代、聡子は、みんなに愛されて徐々に強くなっていく（彼女の血筋もあるが）
最後は、彼女の成長した強さが、つらい結果を招くことになる。彼女の愛されてきた人たちへの恩返し、村の長の娘としての責任感。
涙なしでは読めません。
物語の最後に、語り部であった峰子のつぶやきは今の世の中への警鐘ともとれ心にずっしと重くきました。

不思議な力を持ちながら、ひっそりと暮らしている「常野（とこの）一族」今回は、幼い頃、槙村家の娘「聡子」の遊び相手として、お屋敷に上がった主人公が「春田一家」という常野一家に出会ったひと夏の回想録。

待ちに待った『光の帝国―常野物語』の続編。しかも、あの「春田一家」が出てくるとあって、もうワクワクして読みました。時代背景から情景描写がとても詩的で美しく、読み急ぐにはあまりにももったいないので、逸る気持ちを抑えながら読み進めました。

数々の小さな出来事が、手繰り寄せられひとつの流れとなってラストに向かう様は、さすが！と今更ながら恩田陸さんの力のすごさにうなってしまいました。『光の帝国』を読んだ人にはいっそうおもしろく、そうでない人にも十分味わえる作品です。

主人公の「私」が少女だった頃、父親に「勉学のためにも日記をつけるように」と言われます。それで日々のことを綴った冊子につけた名前が「蒲公英草紙」。彼女は「草紙」と名づけたところが気に入っています。物語は回想という形で、村の名主の病気がちで寝たきりの娘、聡子との交流が中心となって語られています。名主の屋敷には居候のような按配で住み着いている客人など、個性的な登場人物たちで溢れています。中でも特に不思議な雰囲気に満ちているのは、ある日村に突然やってきた春田一家の４人です。彼らは常野（とこの）の一族という、ある特別な力を持った人たちでした。「光の帝国　常野物語」（集英社文庫）では短篇集だったのですが、今回は中篇小説となっています。あなたも読んでいるうちに常野一族のやさしい魔法に包まれていることでしょう。
