舞台は平安時代。今でいう警察にあたる検非違使（けびいし）庁の下位の官人で盗賊追捕の役を仰せつかっている髭麻呂こと藤原資麻呂が、恋人の梓女や従者の雀丸とともに事件を解決していく痛快なエンターテイメント時代小説です。

なんといっても見かけ（髭面）と性格（臆病者）が違う点がとっても主人公の印象を強くしている。

といっても周りのキャラがとっても秀でてるので若干圧倒されてる感じもするかなあ（笑）
物語は始めは１編１編が独立してるように見受けれたが、途中から話が繋がって来て一気に読ませてくれます。最初、追捕していた蹴速丸（けはやまる）が安麿殺人事件のあたりから髭麻呂と協力しあって解決していく過程はひたすら驚くばかり・・・

最初、謎めいていた蹴速丸が途中からメ!インキャラ（悪玉→善玉）となって行きますからね。

読み終えて本当にカッコいいのは蹴速丸だなあと思われた方も多いはず。
２人（髭麻呂＆蹴速丸）の友情をじっくりと体感出来ること請け合い。

謎が謎を呼ぶ展開も見逃せず、ミステリーとしても上手く味付されてる作品です。

もちろん、時代小説特有の男女の悋気をおこすシーンも十分に楽しめます。

ほのぼのしたエンディングは見事のひと言につきる。
登場人物ひとりひとりの人物造型がしっかりとした作品です。
時代小説苦手な方にもお気軽に読んでいただけますよ。
史上の人物も出てきて歴史の勉強にも少しなりました（笑）
