　伯父の古書店で居候兼店番をしている主人公は、父親の書いた小説を探しているという女性からの依頼を受けて、結末がわからない五つの物語を探し始めます。探していくうちに明らかになる謎とその真実。短編とその結末に２２年前の事件がからみ、複雑ですが面白い。
　米澤さんはロストジェネレーション（氷河期世代）なんですね。夢もなければ希望もない。救いもない。こうして謎を解いても残るのは苦い思いだけ。
　それなのにどこか一筋の希望が見える気がして、読後感はかなりよかったです。
　米澤ファンとしては満足のいく一冊でした。

いやあ、良かった。
期待通りだった。

米澤穂信はおもいっきりミステリーマニアと思ってます。
なのでミステリーファンの期待を裏切りません。

依頼人の亡くなった父の書いた5つの小説を探して物語が進むのですが、
22年前の事件が絡んできて、
見つかった小説を読むと色々と想像できて、
なんともワクワクです。

しかも、見つかる小説が全てリドルストーリーなんですよ。
リドルストーリーとは最後の結末が書かれていないのです。
最後の結末を書くと蛇足になったりして面白くない場合などに
しばしば使われます。

今回は、別に父が５つの結末を残していて、
小説が見つかるたびに、それを付け足して読んでみて、
なぜ、リドルストーリーにする必要があったのか
なぜ、この結末なのか
などを考えながら、謎解きをやるんですよ。
そこが良かった。
色々想像できた。

最後はなんというか、
悲しい気持ちになったけど、
それをリドルストーリー5つで描いた父の気持ちは
ものすごく大切な宝物でした。

去年の「儚い羊たちの祝宴」の最後の一行の魔術といい。
今回のリドルストーリーといい、
期待を裏切らない手法に満足です

家庭の事情で大学を休学し、伯父の古書店に住みこみで働いている芳光は、
松本から来た可南子という女性の依頼で、彼女の父が生前に書いた五篇の
リドルストーリーを探すことになる。

やがて芳光は、二十二年前の、ある未解決事件の存在を知り……。



五篇のリドルストーリー（結末を書かない物語）
が作中作として収められた入れ子構造の本作。

可南子のもとには、それぞれの小説の結末に当たる「最後の一行」が遺されて
おり、小説が発見されるごとに、対応する結末が付されていくことになります。


　　それにしても、可南子の父は、リドルストーリーという形式で小説
　　を書いたにもかかわらず、なぜ結末を別に遺していたのでしょうか？


その謎を解く過程で、芳光は、それぞれ独立している五篇の小説から共通点を抽出し、
それらと二十二年前の未解決事件との間に、どのような照応関係があるかを、手紙や
雑誌記事といった「残されたテキスト」を参照することによって、読み解いていきます。


そういった意味で、本作は暗号ミステリなのですが、扱われているのは、米澤さんが言うところの
〈虚空に放つような暗号〉です。つまり「読まれてはならない」「でも、読んでほしい」という作成者
の撞着が、暗号に反映されているわけです。


　　最終的に、芳光は、可南子の父の迂遠なメッセージを、虚空から掴み取ることに成功します。


しかし、その達成が、予定調和な大団円には、決して繋がらない
というところに、紛れもなく、米澤印が刻印されているといえます。
