　ある夜、深夜に目が醒めて何気なくテレビをつけた。画面には水面に太陽の光が照り返して舟の舳先からのびた縄が揺れているだけのショットが映っていた。「これはル・クレジオだ。」となぜか確信し、次の日新聞で確かめたところ思わず手が震えた。トニー・ガトリフ監督『モンド』。いまだに理由はわかりません。
　ごくまれに芸術は芸術を超えた力をもつことがある。それはほとんど霊感といったものに近い。ぼくにとってこの短編集はそうした霊感にみちあふれた宝石のような作品。海外を旅するさいにはかならず携えて行きます。

同時代のフランス人作家ル・クレジオの前衛的スタイルから平易なスタイルへのちょうど転換期ともいえる時期に書かれた短編小説集。少年や少女を主人公にした孤独、か弱さ、繊細さに感性の注がれた作品。ル・クレジオ的世界の原型が素朴な形で収められた、大人のための童話。

短編集ですがどれも主人公は子供。感受性豊かな彼らの世界に引き込まれます。子供の頃、学校帰りにいろんな事に気を取られていたのを思い出すような本です。 何か疲れてるな。と思ったときに読むと元気になる本です。
