1857年6月、発売と同時に検閲にあい、風俗壊乱の罪に問われた『悪の華』は、「きみは新しい戦慄を創造した」とのユゴーの絶賛をはじめ、フローベルなど多くの知友から賞賛された。第二帝政時代のブルジョア社会から忌避され危険視されたボードレールだが、彼の投じた「近代詩」への波紋はヴェルレーヌ、マラルメ、ランボーに、そしてロートレアモンへと拡がり、その後の世界の詩の流れを決定した。

　ボードレールのこの詩集の翻訳は数多くありますが、初めて読む方にとってはほとんどがとっつきにくいものだと思います。じっくり読めば素晴らしい詩集なのですが、何の予備知識もなく読んだときには内容が頭に入って来ず、印象に残らないとこってあるんですよね。安藤元雄氏の訳は、とにかく言葉がわかりやすく、ちょっとした説明も詩の内容を損ねることなく加えられているので初めての方でもかなり読みやすいです。 　ですけど、星４つというのは、彼の詩を知り尽くし、その世界の重さや暗さを好む人にとってはちょっと軽く響いてしまうかも・・・と思ったからです。まぁ、これは個人の主観によるものですけど。

ボードレール「悪の華」は旧くは上田敏から、堀口大学、鈴木信太郎・・・数々あれど、現代の感覚に一番、しっくり来るのはこの安藤訳ではなかろうか、と私は思います。詰まらない現実から、どうやって抜け出すか？からだを痛めつけてまで詩作したボードレールのほとばしる言葉の数々に胸、打ち、痛みます。恐らく今後、こういった芸術家は、出て来ないでしょう。何遍も繰り返し読んで行きたい詩集です。

ボードレールは耽美主義だとかいう前評判を聞いていましたが、
この詩集を通読してみて、思った以上に作品中での人間の肉の感触を意識させられました。
詩の多くが女性の肉体美関連のものです。時々プラトニックラブの詩もありますが、
全体としてボードレールが徹底して女体を描こうとしていると感じました。
精神的な愛に比べて卑下されやすい肉欲を、開き直ったようにがっちりと書いている点、
やはり只者ではないのだなぁ、と思わされます。
この詩集には初版本から猥褻を理由に削除された詩篇も載っていて、非常に良いです。
