ジャンル分けすると「スパイ小説」になるんでしょうか。
スパイ小説・・・国家間の複雑な政治的問題が軸となり、およそ人間味のないスーパーマンのような主人公が活躍し（００７くらいになると爽快ですが）、最後は予想通りめでたしめでたしで終了する・・・私はあまり好きになれない分野です。

でも！！この小説はスパイ小説でありながら、その定石をまったく踏襲していません。

軸となる北朝鮮の背景は判りやすく簡明に描かれ、登場人物たちは個性的で人間味にあふれ（一人、敵方の謎の人物は眉目秀麗な少女漫画的キャラだけど、それもポジションに合ってて嫌味がない）、ストーリーもどこに向かいどう転がるのか、ページを繰る手を止められません。

特にこの手の国際事情を織り込んだ小説は、やたら日本人の意識改革を叫んでいたり、啓蒙しようとする文章が多くてうんざりするのですが、「北朝鮮の飢餓と日本の飽食」を描きながら、そういった押し付けがまさが全くありません。

するりと物語の中にそういったものを紛れ込ませ、読者に自ら考えさせる、「エンタテイメントの中にある訓え」となっていると思います。
読了後、「プラチナ・ビーズ」というタイトルの意味を、かみ締めずにはいられないはずです。
「あーおもしろかった！」と読み捨てるだけで終わらない物語です。小説として一級品ではないでしょうか。

情報といえばすぐにスパイ活動を思い描くであろう。この物語の主人公でアナリストの葉山は、どこかに潜入したり、盗聴したりして情報を集めるのではない。面と向かっている人の話の中から情報を見つけ出し、分析していくのである。あらゆるところに情報は転がっており、その中からいかに情報を見つけ出すか、これが大切なのである。情報というものに興味のある方、また、日本、アメリカ、北朝鮮をめぐる諜報戦を描いているので、国際情勢に関心のある方、ぜひ一読を薦める。ちなみに文庫版のための書き下ろし短編も収録されている。

作家自身が防衛庁ご出身ということもあり、フィクションとはいえ、ノンフィクションのような気がして夢中になった。これを読んでから、この作家が出している本は必ず読んでいるが、裏切られることはない。作品には作家のその時その時の思いが集約され、登場人物たちは常に憑かれたように情熱的で、悲哀に満ちている。プラチナビーズが何を示しているのかを知ったときには、やはりアジアの一員である日本人であることに対して、じっと考えてしまった。
