本書は、1994年8月に雑誌掲載されている。レビューアーの記憶が確かなら、PC9801とAT互換機(いわゆるDOS/Vパソコン)がしのぎを削っていた時代の事だ。コンピュータウイルス等というものは、ほとんど存在しないし、インターネットなんてものは一般の人は全く知らないような、そんな時代だった。「コンピュータウイルスって、人間に感染するの？」という素朴な主婦の会話をレビューアが喫茶店で小耳に挟んだのは本書の初稿が雑誌に載ってから数年も後の話である。そして、今なお、知っている人に言わせればとんちんかんな「コンピュータウイルスって、子供にうつる？」という疑問はポピュラーなのである。さてさて、井上夢人氏の作品はレビューを書くのが難しい。なぜなら、少しでも内容に踏み込もうものなら、一部の読者から「ネタバレだー」とのクレームが届くだろうし、かといって全く内容に踏み込まないのではレビューにならない。そこで、ちょっと工夫を凝らして解説に踏み込む事にする。
　本書の解説は、当時月刊アスキーの編集長をされていた遠藤氏が書かれている。小説の解説を、コンピュータ雑誌の編集長が書く、というのはおそらくは異例の事だろう。折しも今年、アスキーはコンピュータ雑誌を卒業し、ビジネス紙として生まれ変わるそうだが、井上夢人氏の描くコンピュータは現在のコンピューティング技術の最高峰を持って到達しうるかどうか微妙な点に常にいる。岡嶋二人名義の作品ではあるが、「99%の誘拐」とほぼ同じトリックが実現できるようになったのはここ数年の事なのである。パワーオフの世界を一般の人が本質的に感じる事が出来るようになるまでに後何年の月日が必要になるのか。コンピュータ業界の末席に座る身としては頭が下がる思いである。

ウイルスやハッキング、進化する人工生命など今読んでも面白い話です。
1996年に書かれているのですが、その当時のインターネットについても面白いです。
まだハッキングなどの取り締まりもあまりない時代です。
5年ほどしか経っていないのですが、時代の進歩の早さもすごく実感しました。

パソコンやインターネット、プログラムなどの難しい事がわからなくてもすごく分かりやすくていいです。

現代社会はネットワークによってなりたっていると言っても過言ではないだろう。「I LOVE YOU」というコンピュータウィルスが話題になったが、このパワーオフではそのウィルスが生命であり、驚異的なスピードで進化していた。読み出したら止まらず、読み入ってしまった。このさき、このような事態がないとは言いきれない分、ＳＦチックではありながら、どこか現実感を感じさせていた。ぜひ、読んでみてください
