　詩人谷川俊太郎の記念すべき出発点となった昭和の名詩集『二十億光年の孤独』が文庫本でお目見えするのは、なんとこれがはじめてなんだそうです。意外な気がします。

　いまから半世紀も昔に、太平洋戦争の敗戦国でまだ貧しかった日本の、二十歳そこそこの若者が出版したとは信じられないくらいに、みずみずしい抒情と快活な才気に富んだ詩が５０篇。
　当時の詩壇の大御所だった三好達治が序詩を寄せて絶賛したことも納得できる、画期的で清新な詩集です。
　処女作には作家のすべてがあるとしばしばいわれますが、この詩人の場合も、現在にいたる旺盛な詩作の拡がりと深まりの萌芽をここに見いだすことができるのではないかしら。

　本書には、表題の詩集のほかに、読解の助けになる貴重な文章がいくつか、草稿となった自筆の大学ノートの一部の写真版、それから高校程度の英語力があれば読めそうな全収録作品のやさしい英訳までも附録についていて、文句のつけようがない充実ぶりです。
　これはおすすめ。

「万有引力とはひき合う孤独の力である」　−二十億光年の孤独−
"Universal gravitation is the power of the solitudes pulling each other." -two billion light-years of Solitude-

この文庫のおもしろいところは、英訳と著者の草稿、コピーが一緒になっていること。
別の視点から見るおもしろさがあり、そして谷川の言葉運びに改めてほれぼれする。

英訳と比べてみると、それは分かる。
詩はどんなに上手に訳しても、原文の30%も引き出すことはできないという言葉があるが、なるほどと納得する。
そこかしこに科学用語が使われているが、彼の日本語はそれがあまり無機質な響きを持たない。
英語になると、ふむ、どこかよそよそしいのはなぜだろうか。
英訳が対になっていることで、見つかる日本語の美しさもある。

ふだん詩を読まない人間でも、この本は楽しめた。
おすすめの一冊。

日本語と英語で詩集が出ていることを初めて知りました。
英語のタイトルはTwo Billion Light-Years of Solitude。
この文庫には、両方収納されていて、とてもお得です。

谷川俊太郎は不得意分野でしたが、英語の勉強にもなるので、若い人にも読んでもらえると嬉しい。
「二十億光年の孤独」「ネロ」「はる」などを所蔵している。
英語の表現の微妙なところは分かりませんが、英語で文章を書くときの参考にしたいと思いました。
