50年代からはじまって、雑誌「明星」の表紙の写真が掲載された、秘蔵本です。写真だけでも嬉しいですが、その時代時代のスターのあり方や、映画からテレビへのメディアの変化、プロダクションのタレント養成の仕方の変化、といった背景を解説してくれています。当初女性だけの表紙だった明星が、男女混合になり、最後はジャニーズ事務所の男性タレントだけになっていくという変遷があったとは知りませんでしたが、楽しみながら時代を考察するきっかけをくれる本だと思います。

これほど胸が揺す振られる「写真集」は見たことが無い。
著者の解説も簡潔にして的確であり、素晴らしい。

なにしろ半世紀続いてる月刊芸能雑誌の表紙がカラーで、ページをめくるごとに次から次へと出てくるわけで、ハンパじゃないインパクトだ。よくもまぁこれだけ……、という感慨。いや、それ以前に迫力というか、ある種の畏敬の念すら、この表紙のかたまりには覚えてしまうのだ。70年代の『明星』の表紙やカラーページの写真で強烈なインパクトを与えた、天才カメラマン・篠山紀信による巻頭文、そしてこの半世紀の日本の芸能の流れが読むだけでわかってしまう-近年の『Myojo』としての展開に、ただ単純にエールを送っているように見えて、実は…！　という部分もある-、橋本治による「解題」もすばらしい。

なお個人的には、300ページあたりからの（ま、90年代以降の…）分を省いて、もう少し安く出していただけていれば、文句なく☆５つだったのだが。あ、いや、（96年以降、「はじめから５人だった」ことになっている）某グループのメンバーが、間違いなく６人いる表紙もいっぱい載っているので、そこに価値を見い出すなら、話はまた違ってくるのかも……。
