銃砲店襲撃や金融機関強盗といった刑事犯活動の先鋭化によりメンバーが日本全国に指名手配され「ごぼう抜き」されていくにつれ、メンバーが次第に追い詰められ、そして自暴自棄のマグマが溜まっていく様子がジワジワとしかし的確に描かれ、一気に読ませる。

なお、備忘ながら第１４話で襲撃されたのは、宮城県旧泉市（現仙台市）にあった振興相互銀行黒松支店。また、「月山さん」（正直、これまで登場した女性登場人物の中では一番魅力的な美人だと思います）として登場するのは玉振佐代子。

「注意力と行動力の訓練にもなりますね、万引きは」（６６頁）。（万引きは自分と社会との間を切らせる）「暴走族の入会儀式と一緒」（２０７頁）。万引きから始まる「革命」なんてあるの？それにしても、北海道札幌市で中国根拠地論が発祥したとは知りませんでした。

異色　の一言に尽きる。
これまでの山本直樹の作品からしても異色。
この時代に精緻な赤軍事件のドキュメンタリーを連載することも異色。
作中の登場人物につけられた番号、逮捕・死までの時間掲示も異色。

はっきり言って、ここまでは評価が難しい。
すごく面白いかといえばそうでもないが、つまらないということもない。
ただ、これからの結末に向けて非常に面白くなる気もするし、その面白さのためにはこの単調さは必要な気もする。
完結したときに一気に読むとうならせるような作品となるかもしれない。

しかし、この重さは半端ではない。

この巻では最後の数話を除けばほとんどが岩木、すなわち植垣康博を中心に描かれていて、段々と追いつめられていく彼らにあって活動家というより一人の男の青春像という目線で描かれている。巻末で押井守監督と山本直樹が対談しているが、押井は赤軍派の大菩薩峠の山荘に籠もっての「軍事訓練」が本人たちは真剣だったのだろうが、サークルの合宿や運動部の練習の延長でしかなかっただろうと喝破している。言葉ばかりが先走って現実が追いついていってないというギャップをこの巻でもうまく表現できている。
岩木の恋人月山が逮捕されたとき『捕まったのはある意味幸運だった、その後の「地獄めぐり」に巻き込まずにすんだのだから』と書かれてあるが、まさにこれは嵐の前の静けさだった。
