作中に主人公ギンコの「ここは桃源郷か」というセリフがあるのだが、この作品全体が桃源郷。

蟲の被害者など、登場人物は、解脱したんじゃないかとも思えるほど無欲。
たとえば金銭欲に関して。
ギンコが紙巻きタバコを愛用しているから、維新後の時代設定の
はずだが、貨幣経済からほとんど切り離されている。
作中に現金すらほとんど出てこない。
愛憎についても、描かれるのは家族愛とかで、
不倫だとか嫉妬だとか倒錯だとか、俗っぽいところが出てこない。

蟲にやられた病人やその家族が望むことは、蟲に関わってしまう以前への原状回復のみ。
蟲を積極的に利用しようとする人も、望むことは家族や村の平穏な日常が継続することだけ。

物語を構成するのに、取り入れたくなる俗な要素を、作者が禁欲的な態度で排除しているのである。
作者のマンガ作りの志は尊敬に値する。
こんな無謀な制約のもとで連作が長期に続いているのは、ものすごいことだ。

このストイックさ、美しさ。
この本は日本マンガ界の頂点に達したのではないだろうか。

初期の蟲師に比べ、蟲師であってあまりに蟲師らしくなかった前巻の６巻。
ものすごく好きな作品ですが（だからこそ）、この巻でも駄目なら手を引こうと思って買った７巻でした。

私の読んでみての感想はやや持ち直してきたかなという感じです。
初期の頃の圧倒的な感じは受けないまでも、６巻の様な拍子抜けな感じはしませんでした。
６巻の頃はアニメ化だなんだでバタバタした影響がもろに出ちゃったんでしょうか。
（季刊の頃の作品に比べ１話１話に深みを感じないのはやはり時間が足りなせいなんでしょうかね。）

漆原さんの日本民話のような漫画という稀有な作風をこれからも失わずにいて欲しいと願うばかりです。

・雷の袂
・棘(おどろ)のみち 前編 後編
蟲よりもやや人間よりですが、それもホラーあり、恋あり（笑）、母と子のすれ違いありと、各物語の「うまく言葉で言えないような感情」が今回もつまっています。
棘のみちは前に登場した淡幽お嬢さんも出てきますし、蟲師の世界観の重要どころでもあるので見逃せない巻です。
