　本書は２０００年代の「教育格差」の実態と解決の方向性を紹介した本です。
　「教育格差」。公立の中高一貫校と学校選択性による教育格差、財源による自治体間の教育格差、経済力による生徒間の教育格差、正規・非正規雇用という教員間の違いによる教育格差、など、日本の教育に関わる格差がありありと紹介されています。とくに、著者の親戚Mくんが実際に受けたという、中学校での集団暴力事件の実態はまさに戦慄であり、日本の教育が陥っている危機的状況をはっきりと描き出しています。不十分な対応の教員と、我が子のことしか考えない保護者。教育に市場原理を導入して現場に大混乱を引き起こしている行政・政治。
　この様な混沌とした日本の教育に対して著者は主にフィンランドの教育を参照軸に、問題の所在の割出と解決策の提示を行っていきます。政府がPISAを意識して導入した総合学習だが、教職過程からその指導法が除外された（０単位）経緯や（フィンランドでは７０単位）、フィンランドと同様に学校間格差が少ない秋田県が全国学力テストで上位を得たこと、高卒では仕事が得られない現実と専門高校の充実で専門職の育成に成功しているフィンランド。また、いまの日本の子どもは「協力する」機会が生活から少なくなり、他者と協力することが苦手になってきていますが、フィンランドではグローバル社会の広がりの中で、価値観の違いを認め合いながら新しいものを作り出していく力が必要であるという認識から、グループ学習を積極的に取り入れているという。本書でも出てくる「ウィークタイズ（弱い絆）」を積極的に形成していく教育であり、著者の提起する問題意識を持って他者を思う人間のあり方でもある。
　本書は現在の教育格差、教育の荒廃について知るだけでなく、その問題の所在と解決の方向まで提起されている良書です。新書という限られた紙幅で、豊富なデータ、事例の紹介、総合的な視野を盛り込んだ大変意欲的な研究です。「現場の教育学」を標榜する著者の渾身の思いが込められた本書は、多くの教育実践者に読んでもらいたい本です。

学力世界一のフィンランドは教師の力量を養成するために「総合演習」を重視しているのに、日本の大学の教職課程では「総合演習」が必修からはずされた。学力向上に向けた取り組みにお金を使わず、武道場の建設に大金を投じる。こうした日本の教育の優先順位のおかしさを指摘し、「処方箋」は出ているのだから、あとは実行あるのみ、と「格差」解消の方向性を明らかにしている。学者にありがちな「上から目線」ではなく、現場を取材してきたジャーナリストならではの指摘は読ませる。

5.0 out of 5 stars できるだけ客観的な現状認識から教育現場をみつめている姿勢を評価します, 2009/7/25
でも、「できるだけ客観的な現状認識」で、本当の子どもたちの内面のことが理解できて、課題についての処方箋があるのかというと、少し立ち止まります。

作者の知見や、判断が妥当であればあるほど、個別の無数の見落とされるケースがあって、それで孤立感と絶望感に生きていく空しさを感じるのが、子どもが大人になるには必要なことだというのなら、少なくとも私は、死んでも大人になりたくありません。

この本の読んでつらいのは、たぶん世の中の日本の人口の数だけ、いらっしゃる教育評論家の過半数よりも、直接子どもたちに、影響力を行使できる立場にいることです。

そして、何もできない理由を自分なりに見つけようとしなければ、一歩も前にいけない、もちろん後戻りもできない自分がいることです。
