舞台は小学校の教室。子供向けの話だと思って読み始めましたが、大人が読んでも楽しめる本でした。
文章はわかりやすく小学校中〜高学年から読めますが、読む時期によって感想が変わりそうです。私はノエル先生の視点で読みました。

著者はアメリカ出身だそうですがフランスで出版された小説だそうで、ハリウッド的なみんなハッピーって展開にならないところがよいです。映画化されたら面白そうな話でした。

フランスの新学期、5年生になったクラスの新しい担任の先生はみんなががっかりする年寄りの先生だった。
この本が素晴らしのは、ノエル先生によって人生を楽しむ方法を学ぶ子供たちと、ノエル先生を退職においこんだペレス校長の人格を敢えて変化させなかったまま、ノエル先生が自分を楽しませるために行動して終わるのがなんとも心憎い演出。
人生を愉しめないペレス校長の人格を否定せず提示だけすることで、どういう生き方を選択したいのか読者に委ねているのだ。
ノエル先生がこわいと思っていたもの「にくしみ」も、この本から生まれていない。
それは、「一度読めば、そのすべてが一生自分のものになる」と、本を子供たちにプレゼントしたノエル先生の気持ちでもあり、作者からのプレゼントの作品だからだ。
この本を読んであなたも、人生を楽しむ方法を見つけましょう。
