早瀬 乱
1963年大阪府生まれ。法政大学文学部英文学科卒業後、大学受験のための英語講師となる。2004年、『レテの支流』で日本ホラー小説大賞長編賞佳作となり、同作が角川ホラー文庫から出版される。2006年、『三年坂 火の夢』で第52回江戸川乱歩賞受賞(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

’０６年、「第５２回江戸川乱歩賞受賞作」。同時受賞の『東京ダモイ』とは異なり、明治時代の東京を舞台にした歴史＆青春ミステリーである。

内村実之（さねゆき）は１８才、奈良県のとある町の旧制中学５年生である。ある夏の日、５才年上の帝大生の兄が突然帰郷した。それも、帝大を勝手にやめて、下宿を引き払い、渡されていた残りの学資も使い果たし、さらには腹部に傷を負って・・・。やがて兄は「実は三年坂で転んでね」と、謎の言葉を残してあっけなく死んでしまう。実之は、兄の死の謎を解くため、旧制一高進学を決意、単身上京する。彼はさまざまな人たちと出会いながら、“坂の町”東京で「いくつもある三年坂」を探して歩き回るのだが・・・。

ストーリーは、この実之の物語を「三年坂の章」として、そして予備校の鍍金（めっき）先生の東京の大火事についての推理行の物語を「火の夢の章」として、このふたつの章が交互に描かれて進んでゆく。

普通のミステリーが持っていない、奇妙だが、魅力的な“謎”を持つ小説だった。特に明治期の東京を「坂の町」としてみるという着眼点はユニークだと思う。

難をいえば、実之の「三年坂」探索行が、注釈が多くて、私のように東京以外の住人で東京の地理に詳しくない人にはつまらなかった事だろう。

この回の乱歩賞受賞作は２作品とも比較的厳しい評価がされているが、私は本書には及第点をあげてもいいのではないかと思う。

江戸が色濃く残る東京の地図を追うのは楽しいが、ミステリとしてはいかがなものか。
プロットが弱いというか、謎の核心が時代劇じゃあなあ、と。
読了したけど、ブックオフ行きだねえ。
