児童福祉に関わる知人が言っていた。いじめにあっていることを、仕返しが怖いなどではなく、情けなくて恥ずかしいために親に言いたくない子どもが少なくないと。小学校でいじめを受けた主人公・現在中二の「私」もそうだった。学校で散々情けない思いを味わわされている子どもにとって、親は、そんな自分をさらしたくない最後の砦なのかもしれない。また子どもは親をよく見ている。本書では、パートから社員に登用されてはりきっている母親、「そういう人に打ち明けるのは難しかった」。そんなくだりにリアリティを感じて引き込まれた。
中学で学区が変わり、幸い小学校の同級生とは離れた。再び同じ目にあわないよう「私」は作戦を立てる。「一つ、クールに生きていく。二つ、友達は作らない」。その作戦は一見うまく機能している。でも心は作戦で守れる程単純ではなかった。バランスを崩した心が磁力となって「私」と28歳のサラさんという女性を引き合わせ、物語が始まる。
「私」がサラさんに親しんでいくのはなぜか。「これまで出会った中でいちばんカンペキで、いちばんやさしい大人」だからか。このフレーズは、サラさんの私生活を詳しく尋ねられずにいる「私」が、「それで十分」と自分を納得させるために考えたものだ。これが間に合わせの答えであるのと同様、二人が一緒にいるようになる本当の理由もそこにはない。では何が・・・？　「私」がどう壁を乗り越えていくのか、その過程で二人の距離感がどう変わっていくのか、ぜひ読んでいただきたい。
本書は児童文学として96年に刊行された単行本を大幅に加筆・訂正したものとのこと。自分は単行本は未読だが、既読のかたもどう変わったか気になる場合はご一読を。
