高野 和明
1964年東京都生まれ。’85年より、映画、TV、Vシネマの撮影現場で経験を積み、岡本喜八氏の門下に入る。’89年渡米し、ロサンゼルス・シティカレッジで映画演出、撮影、編集を学ぶ。’91年に同校を中退。帰国後、映画・テレビなどの脚本家となる。’01年に『13階段』で第47回江戸川乱歩賞を受賞(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

どうしても較べてしまう。
じゃあ、較べてどうかということなのだが、１３階段が出色の出来だっただけに
どうしても落ちる。
さーっと書いたなというのが見えてしまう。
ただし、筆力のアップは認める。
素材は一級。ただ、この素材を扱うにはまだちょっと早すぎたかなというのが正直な印象。
以上が２００５年７月のレビュー。
幽霊人命救助隊が出た今、要注目の作家である。
あの線でいってくれるといいが、また裏切って欲しい気もある。

悪党の主人公、八神俊彦。
彼は悪い自分と訣別するために骨髄移植のドナーとなり、
移植手術のための入院を翌日に控えていた。
だが金銭に不安があり、金を借りるために友人宅を訪ねる。
しかしそこで見たのは友人の死体。
おまけにその場で面識のない複数の人間に襲われ、
八神は逃走を開始する。自分の骨髄液を待つ白血病患者の為にも、
何とか明日までには病院に行かなくてはならないのだが・・。

追っ手をかいくぐりながら病院に向かいたい八神。
そして八神を追い続ける謎の集団。
一方、不気味な風貌と処刑方法で次々と殺人を犯す
謎の人物・グレイヴディッガー。
ストーリーは疾走感を含みながら展開していく。

グレイヴディッガーがあの風貌をする理由や、
中世の処刑方法に拘る理由等、疑問点もいくつかあるが、
ストーリー自体は面白いし、何より疾走感があるので、
個人的にはそういった違和感は些末な事であり、許容範囲。
映像化しても面白い作品になるかもしれない。

「十三階段」で第４７回江戸川乱歩賞を受賞した作家の受賞後第一作。

「グレイヴディッガー」という題名からはホラー的な展開を予想するかもしれないが、ヨーロッパ中世の魔女狩りの時代に実在した「グレイヴディッガー」の殺人方法を模した連続殺人の話である。

着想・展開は申し分ないのだが、この作品には「必然性」がない。

なぜ、わざわざ「グレイヴディッガー」を模して殺人を行う必要があるのか？
なぜ、八神は逃げ続けるのか？本当に患者を助けたいと思っているのか？
なぜ、岡田医師は「第二ドナー」にまで連絡を取るという患者にとって緊迫した状況下で、何の手も打たずに漫然と待っていられるのか？
なぜ、被害者達は○○なのに、簡単に殺されてしまうのだろうか？

結局読了後も、私には答えを見つけることはできなかった？
登場人物の行動に「必然性」がなければ、感情移入できない。

作者の経歴から考えても作者はおそらく映像的なイメージから作品を書いているのであろう。それは決して悪いことではないと思うが、「グレイヴディッガーの放つ矢」「モノレールの高架を走って逃げるシーン」など、映像の派手さ・奇抜さを優先して書いているのではないかと疑りたくなる。

クライマックス前の病院でのシーンは本当に起こりうるのだろうか？普通に考えれば無理だと思うが・・・
先に書いたように、物語のスピード感、殺人の動機付け等が面白いだけに、もったいないと強く感じた。

同じ作家の作品では「幽霊人命救助隊」がおすすめである。こちらはミステリーではないが、傑作だと思う。
