1994年姑獲鳥の夏でデビューした京極が1996年に発表した２作目。日本推理作家協会賞受賞作品。
「都會（とかい）を離れる歸省（きせい）の列車は空いてゐた」「男は匣（はこ）をもってゐた」「匣の中には奇麗な娘がぴったりはいってゐた」と雰囲気たっぷりの序文ではじまる本作は、自信の筆で姑獲鳥の夏からさらに大きく世界観を広げている。
前世、今生を持ち合う二人の少女、巨大な箱型研究所を運営するマッドサイエンティストの美馬坂とそこに出入りする元女優の柚木陽子。魍魎を閉じ込め信者を救済する新興宗教・御筥様（おんばこさま）と、それにつながる地獄の火車がばらまくような手足のバラバラ投棄事件。
難解な事件に立ち向かうは前作から引き続き登場の、突っ走り型刑事の木場、富豪にして超能力探偵の榎木津、「ワトソン博士役」の小説家関口。そしてわれらが京極堂。
合計1000ページ以上にわたる大作だが、大作であるがゆえの醍醐味を十分味わわせてくれる。魍魎ワールドにどっぷり浸れる上に、倒錯とトリックがいりみだれる。文句なしに京極夏彦のベストである。
分冊版にしてくれているので重くなくて読みやすいのもよい。

京極堂シリーズのどれを最高とするかは意見の分かれる所だと思いますが、
旧字体・旧かな使いの妖しさ、「姑獲鳥の夏」より拍車のかかったけれん味や博覧強記っぷりなどを考えて、
これが京極さんの真骨頂だと感じます。
まず冒頭の旧漢字の部分を読んでみてください。
「え？！」と思った人にはお勧めです。その妖しいムードが全編をつらぬいています。
映画化は「姑獲鳥の夏」よりさらに難しいのでは。

著者の出身は函館ということで、この箱に関しては興味深い。
魍魎という言葉は愛知万博のマスコットモリゾーに音が似ていて興味深い。

文庫が白いというのも魅力のひとつだ。

白が好きな人、箱が好きな人に欠かさず勧めているが成果の上がらない一冊。おそらくそれとは違う嗜好の人に受けるのだろう。
