　解説で笠井潔氏はこの作品を本格だと言っていますが、明らかに夢野久作の系譜に連なるアンチ・ミステリだと思います。読者が推理する要素は殆どなく、事件その物も探偵役が関口でなければ狂人の仕業として簡単に処理されていたでしょう。狂人の起こした事件を同じく狂気に侵された関口が捜査することによって初めてミステリとなるのです。本格ミステリは犯人の作り出した謎を探偵が解明しますが、この作品では探偵である関口自身が謎を作り出してしまっています。そういう意味でこの作品もドグラ・マグラと同じく「狂人の書いた推理小説」と言えるのではないでしょうか。

電車の中で読めない、腕が痛くなった、持てない、鞄に入らない、両手でないとページがめくれない、等々あの厚さが友人に勧める時いくら素晴らしい作品であってもかなり問題となっていました。有り難い。
でも『厚い本』＝『京極夏彦』な部分もあったので寂しい気もしますね。製本技術の限界？？１冊にまとめられた方が安い事は言うまでもありませんが。

初めてこの作者の本を読んだのは、中古書籍の「狂骨・・・」でした。
シリーズ物になっていたとは知らずに、この前作のキャラの顛末やら、
以前関わった事件がホニャララ・・・と語られては前作が気になるではありませんか（笑）
商売上手な作家だなと思いつつ新刊で購入したノベルズサイズの
「姑獲鳥の夏」を買ったのは、「狂骨・・・」を読み終えた翌日だったのははるか昔。
１９９６年の秋の事でした。

あれから１０年くらい経過して映画化の話が出て、実相寺監督がメガホンをとるという事で、
個人的に異様にテンションがあがって、ノベルズを読み返そうと思った時に数々の
予想される出来事が脳裏をかすめ、
「あの分厚い書籍を持ち歩いて読むのはちょっと疲れるな・・・」と京極ファンが
ぶちあたる壁を軽くスルーさせたのはこの分冊文庫版です。

これ以前にも文庫はありますけれど、そいつもノベルズサイズの分厚さがコンパクトになっただけの、
小型辞書よりも分厚いモノ。（縦の長さが寸詰まりになっただけやん！と思いました）
ちょっと厚めの文庫を持ち歩く分には支障もなく、
「なにそれ？辞書読んでるの？」とは訊かれずに、普通の文庫を読んでいる風に
見えるのはありがたい。

以前の作品を読み直すのにはこのサイズが適当であり、おおまかなストーリーの流れも
把握していたり忘れていた事を補完したりと、実に活躍してもらいました。
もちろん、続巻も購入し仕事の合間や時間を作ってなんとか１０日くらいで
上下巻を読んだのかな・・・あの２００５年の夏は。

初めて読んだ時は止められなくて、読む時間を作りながらなんとか４日で読んだ記憶がありますけどね。
分冊だから一気に買ってもいいし、１冊づつ買ってもいいし、財布の中身をみながら買えるのが、ビンボー人には丁度いい。

余談ですが、「姑獲鳥の夏」の分冊文庫を読み終えたあと、その勢いで映画も観ましたし、
DVDも購入し、あまつさえ「魍魎の匣」の分冊文庫にまで手をだしてしまいました。
講談社と作家がニヤリとほくそ笑む姿が見えそうです・・・。
