岩手県出身の高橋克彦氏は、故郷の東北にこだわった歴史小説を書いている。特に講談社文庫の『火怨』、『炎立つ』とこの『天を衝く』の３部作はどれも読み応えがある。
平安初期に朝廷に反旗を翻した蝦夷の英雄アテルイを描いた『火怨』は吉川英治文学賞を受賞、前九年・後三年の役から奥州藤原氏の盛衰までを描いた『炎立つ』は渡辺謙の主演でNHKの大河ドラマにもなった。

そして、今回文庫化された『天を衝く』は戦国末期の東北・南部の武将・九戸正実（くのへまさざね）を描く。とにかく戦（いくさ）の場面が多い。勝てる戦（いくさ）しかしないという九戸正実。相手の裏を読んだ緻密な戦略で、数々の戦いを制していく。しかし、最後には豊臣の軍門に下った主家南部家に見切りつけ、東北平定を目指す豊臣軍に負けを覚悟の悲壮な篭城戦を挑む。正実兄弟を中心にした九戸党の結束の強さ、潔さが強く印象に残る。

陸奥3部作を通して読まれることをお勧めしたい。

九戸政実。この名をきいて分かる人はほとんどいないだろう。
この男を中心として、斯波、安東との抗争。主家である南部の内乱。大浦為信の独立。中世から近世への移り変わりとともに奥羽の歴史も着実に移り変わっていった・・・・。
全三巻からなる話の最終章は九戸の乱となり政実は天下を相手に大喧嘩を挑む。1ページめくるごとに熱いものが胸に込み上げてくる一冊。
