上下巻なので、長編のつもりで読み始めると、最初のうちは著者らしい短編時代小説を読んでいるような気分です。
そのうちに、それらの話は関連があるらしいということが分かってくるのですが・・・・
どのようにつながるのかは読んでからのお楽しみ☆

少しずつ明かされていく事件の謎、個性的な脇役たち、etc
期待を裏切らない仕上がりです。

鉄瓶長屋から次々と店子が姿を消していく本当の理由は――

下巻は、ほぼ解決編、といった感じでした。
上巻ではそれほど活躍の場がなかった弓之助などもたくさん登場し、それなりに面白いのですが…謎解きとしては、あまりに意外性がないかなあ、という気がします。
上巻でいい味を出していた人情話が、とってつけたようになってしまっているのも残念。
謎が解けたところでなにがよくなるわけでもなく…リアリティがある、とも言えるのかもしれませんが、上巻の雰囲気があたたかかっただけに、なんだかさみしい気がしました。

うーむ、こういう結論だったか…。

時代推理小説として、際立った傑作とは言いがたいが、キャラクター造形の妙とあいまって充分楽しめる作品にはなっている。特に後半異彩を放つ美小年探偵弓之助、人間テープレコーダーおでこ、そして岡っ引きの政五郎。

全てが「ふ」に落ちたわけではない。特に冒頭の殺人事件の処理の仕方は納得がいかない。

ただ、短編小説集と思わせて、ひとつの長編に仕立てた宮部みゆきの今回の「仕掛け」は気に入った。
