最初は短編が続きます。一話読んで、二話を読み始めるとまた同じ登場人物なので「鬼平」みたいな感じかな思っていると、途中でやはり全てがつながる長編だと分かります。

途中で｢理由｣に何か似ているなあと感じました(下巻の54ページで｢理由｣という単語があったとき)。鉄瓶長屋が｢理由｣のマンションみたいな感じ、殺しの理由、長屋から人を追い出す理由などなど。

それぞれの登場人物の人物像を描き出すのはこの作家の得意とするところ。また、稀代のストリーテラー。
ついつい引き込まれます。

ところでこの題名｢ぼんくら｣は主人公井筒平四郎のことでしょうが、作中にはぼんくらという単語は一つも出てきません。井筒平四郎が自分のことを｢ぼんやり｣と述べているところが一箇所あり、それで、ああ｢ぼんくら｣とはこの主人公のことかと気付きました。

最初は唐突な長屋の殺人事件から始まります。
その後一話完結に思えるお話が数羽続いた後、「長い影」というミステリの迷路につながっていく本作。
毎度毎度人物が非常に愛着がわきやすく作ってあり、思わず登場人物に肩入れしながら読んでしまいます。何の知識もないままに読んでも、知らず知らす江戸の雰囲気に飲み込まれていくような書きぶりはほんとに凄いですね！

長編？それとも連作？
多少の戸惑いを持って上巻を読んできたあとだけに、
下巻に入るころにはその手法に得心し、読み進めるほどに『なるほど！』と胸が躍った。

瑣末なものから殺人まで、全ての事件がひとつにつながってゆくプロット。
それはまさしく宮部みゆきの最も得意とするところなのだが、

登場人物たちの素晴らしさと江戸の背景を描く筆力の豊かさに、
読み終わるまでそんな概念はすっかり忘れてしまっていた。

上巻、下巻ともに、読み始めたら止まらない。
それどころか読み終わったあとでさえ、続きが読みたくてたまらなくなる、そんな作品。
井筒平四郎もののシリーズ化を熱望する。
