坂井 三郎
1916年、佐賀県に生まれる。青山学院中学部を中退し、1933年に海軍に入る。戦艦霧島、榛名の砲手をへて、1937年に霞ヶ浦海軍航空隊操縦練習生となり首席で卒業、戦闘機操縦者となる。初陣の1938年以来、九六艦戦、零戦を駆って太平洋戦争の最後まで大空で活躍。200回以上の空戦で敵機大小64機を撃墜したエース(撃墜王)。2000年9月逝去(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

とても読みやすかった。飛行機に詳しくなくてもなんなく読んでいける。
空戦での命の終わりのあっけなさと、それに対するパイロットたちの心構えが
読み終わっても自分の胸の中に重く残った。これは他人に薦めようと思う。
先日亡くなった著者のご冥福をお祈りします。

この本の中で好きなところは多いが、時間の無い方は、「あとがき」だけでも読むことをお勧めする。

真の飛行機乗りになるにはどうしたらいいのか、また坂井氏が努力してきた訓練方法、その方向性、信念は、単に戦闘機操縦のみならず、人生においても通用するものだということが分かる。

坂井氏はこう言う、「敵と戦うよりも、自分と戦うことのほうがずっと苦しいことであることを知った」と。「ほとんどの人は持って生まれた能力の３０％くらいしか使わずにこの世を去っていっている」「人間は自らがつくり上げた第二の天性で勝負するものだ」とも言っている。

太平洋戦争ではすっかり日本が悪者になってしまっているが、この本を読むと、実際、現場の兵士たちが、いかに勇敢に誇りを持って国を守るたに戦ってきたか、というのが分かる。

今ではすっかり、サムライや武士道の精神を受け継ぐ人達というのはこの日本で見当たらなくなってしまった。サムライの精神というのは、こういうものだ、というのを後世に伝えることのできる貴重な一冊だ。

坂井さんの文章は、小学校の話だとそれらしい文体に、二十歳くらいだとまたそれらしい文体に、現在だと俯瞰したような文体にと、実年齢によって文章の感覚に違いが凄くあって自伝的な話なのに当時の少年が作文をかいているような瑞々しさがある。
戦闘機乗りになるまでに散々遠回りをした話をさらっと書いているが「努力」とはこういうことを言うのだなぁと痛感させられる。あとがきにも常に自分を律していることが一番楽なことだと書かれていて、私もそうなりたいなぁと憧れを持って読みきりました。
本書の中での凄みは「死の受け入れ方」について触れられていることです。戦闘機乗りになったからには空で死ぬのが当たり前だという姿勢が全編に貫かれていて、戦士した友を涙を流して弔いながらそれがごく自然なことだと感受できるその戦争心理は、訓練で辿り着ける人間の境地を感じます。
トップガンの映像が文章から凄い迫力で幾重にも展開されていく強烈な本です。
