この本を読んで、「アクティブリスニング」という言葉の大切さを知りました。人、対、人の基本的なこころの通わせ方、特別な技術は必要なく、自分にも相手にも優しいシンプルな、それでも大事な事は何か教えてくれる本です。実際、この本に書かれてあることを意識して行ったら、相手の表情や態度がいきいきとして、お互いの信頼感が増したように思います。みんながこの事を知っていたら、職場でもプライベートでもスムーズな意思疎通ができるのではないだろうか・・・と思わせる本です。

個人に対する一対一のカウンセリングが具体の極なら，書籍による万人に対するカウンセリングは汎用の極である。著者は後者の困難を克服するために，現実のコミュニケーションに存在する複雑な多くの問題を，とてもシンプルな原因に還元してみせる。それは表面的には「相手の話を聞かないこと」であり，内面的には「コミュニケーションの未完了が存在すること」である。解決方法もシンプルで，それぞれ「相手の話を聞くこと」と「未完了を完了させること」であり，そうすることで，本当の安心感が得られ，幸福感が得られるのだと説く。

これらの問題点や解決方法はシンプルだが，すぐには受け入れがたく，実行も難しい。著者は自分自身のつらい体験を含めていろいろな切り口を提示し，優しく語りかけるような口調で話を進める。特に「未完了を完了させる」ための方法（本書p.119）は，本書の白眉ともいえる。確かに，私を含め多くの人が無意識に避けているそこにしか解は存在しない。それはまた，愛や信頼といった「人がもっとも手に入れたい」感情の出発点でもあろう。
