　2006年のワールドカップでジーコジャパンは結果を残せなかった。これは紛れもない事実である。私自身もこんなに世界との差があったのか、と失望したひとりである。

　だが、今の「みんな揃ってオシム礼讃」の風潮には異議を唱えたい。
　もちろん私だって刊行間もない木村元彦さんの『オシムの言葉』を読んで感銘したひとりだ。　ジーコの時代には希薄だった「Ａ代表と下の世代の交流」「下の世代の強化」は、オシムの「隠れた実績」として着目すべきではある。　しかし、まだ公式戦で主だった戦績を残してもいない。「過去の実績」と「オシム語録」だけでの「オシム崇拝」は、結果が伴わなかった時に「危険」が伴う。

　私は今だから、ジーコの“言い分”にも耳を傾けるべきだ、と思う。言うまでもなく、現役時代「神様」と呼ばれていた人物である。サッカーに対する深い洞察はすごく深い。　代表監督の４年間で起こった出来事とそれに対する「ジーコの考え」が理路整然とまとまっている。　試合描写も驚くほど細かい。　トルコで監督をしながら、この著作の原稿を書いていたとは信じられないくらいである。

　この本を読むと、ジーコが選出した個々の選手に対する評価や日本サッカーに対する想い、日本に対する“愛”を感じる。
　ジーコとオシムが乖離しているか？というと乖離してはいない。やり方、手法が違うことは確かだが、やろうとしていることに乖離はない。

　「オシム語録」を深く学ぶのもいい。
　その前に、深く記憶に残っているジーコジャパンをこの本で振り返り、その上で「オシム本」に臨んでもよいのではないか？

鹿島の黄金期を作り上げたジーコ。日本代表でもその再現を願っていたが、残念ながらドイツでは失望を味わってしまった。

ジーコは敗北の要因に「日本人のコミュニケーション能力の低さ」をあげている。オーストラリア戦の敗因は、全てがそれに起因しているとまで述べている。日本人は思いを言葉にして口にださない。そしてジーコも選手を信頼してあまりルールは作らなかった。そのため、「オーストラリア戦で途中出場の小野をどう使うか」、「どこで相手にプレッシャーを与えるか」などチームのベクトルを合わせることができなかったという。残念ながらジーコは15年間日本のために働いたが、日本人の性格を把握できなかったのだ。そして、現在の日本にはトルシエ・オシムといった教師タイプの監督があっているということがわかった。

ただし、ジーコの言うことは正しい。日本人もコミュニケーション能力を上げていかなければ世界とは戦えない。ジーコは日本人には早すぎたのだ。

ジーコのことを「素人」だとか「サッカーを知らない」などと、恥ずかしくもなく言う、ＣＳとか雑誌の観過ぎの、選手の並べ方とか戦術オタクの方々はこの本を読んでも「言い訳」だと吐き捨てるのだろう・・・。

ブラジル代表としてＷ杯３度、フラメンンゴでトヨタカップＭＶＰ、テクニカルコーディネータとしてＷ杯準優勝し、監督としてもトルコリーグで就任１年目でガラタサライやベシクタシュを破り大差で優勝したのだから、彼は世界のサッカーを知っていて、それを全身全霊で日本へ伝えてくれた。
ドイツＷ杯の、オーストラリア戦の前の記者会見で「私の知っている事はすべて伝えた・・・」と語った彼の言葉どおり、あとは日本がそれをどう生かすかだろう。
サッカー後進国の日本のサッカーファンもこの本でジーコが言いたい事の真意に耳を傾けるべきではないだろうか・・・。

１５年間日本サッカーをここまで育ててくれて有難う。
