　臆病な二十歳がいる既にして老人。
　勇気ある六十歳がいる青春のまっただなか。

　中高一貫して暗く、大学受験に失敗し、浪人生となり、がんばろうという意欲も起こらず、友達も無く、彼女も無く、夢も無く、なにもかも怖く嫌だった日々。この本に出会うまで、僕はこの詩の通り既にして「老人」でした。そして今はなんとかして「青春まっただなかの青年」になろうと頑張っています。

青春なんて、
人に説かれるものじゃないって
思っていたけれど、
今、私、青春してる？
春は、どこまでも青く、みずみずしいもの。
心に燃える色を残しておかないと、
しぼんでしまうものなんだよね。
人は、夢をなくしてしまった時に老人になる。
夢はあるけれど、情熱のない私はどうなんだろう・・・。
我が子やよそ様の子に情熱を注ぐ日々。
もっと自分自身に燃えなくちゃ！！
そんな気にさせてくれた一冊です。
むずかしいことばがなく、
オーソドックスだけれど、
それ故に、心に柔らかくなじんでくれる、
やさしい詩です。

昨日（2005.5.8）、東海ラジオの対談番組に著者 新井満さんが出られての話題によりこの本を書くことになったいきさつから、Youthという詩にまつわる裏話をいろいろ知りました。マッカーサーも座右の銘としてしばしば引用していたとか、青春の会というのが２０年前に日本で開催され、ウルマンのお孫さんが招かれたことなど、……。それに今有名になっている詩の中の特によく引用される３行が原作にはなく、誰かによって追加されたものであるということは意外でした。この詩はすでに他の方による格調高い名訳がありましたが、新井さんは現代人により分かりやすい表現で提示されています。とかく我々年寄り世代に都合のよい詩のように捉えられがちなYouthを若い人たちにも是非親しんでいただきたいものです。新井さんは、青春度年数＝夢×情熱　と表現されています。夢がなければ年齢が若くても青春度ゼロということでした。そんな対談を聞いて私は書店に駆けつけました。
