   第28回川端康成文学賞を受賞した「権現の踊り子」ほか「鶴の壺」「矢細君のストーン」「工夫の減さん」「ふくみ笑い」「逆水戸」の全6編からなる短編集。1編1編が短いがゆえの余韻を残しつつ、テンポ良く進んでいく。

 「俺は昔から権現が好きだった。ゴンゲン。響きが素敵」。「おばはん」から権現市ができたと聞き、剃刀を買いに出かけた「俺」。だが市と祭りは来週かららしく、主催者の男に頼まれて準備中の料理を味見することになる。ぺかぺかのプラスチックカップに入ったワイン、羊の肋（あばら）肉、「ハンバーカレー」…。そして「もはや恥辱そのもの」の「権現躑躅踊り」を披露されるに至り、「俺」の困惑はいよいよ深まっていく（「権現の踊り子」）。

   大切な壺を返すため入院中の友人を訪ねるが、病院にたどり着けない男の話（「鶴の壺」）。スーパーの定員や警察官、信頼していた友人までもが始めた「ふくみ笑い」に追い詰められていく男の話（「ふくみ笑い」）。荒唐無稽な話ばかりだが、そこに漂う焦燥感と息苦しさは、読むほどに読者自身の体験と重なっていく。深刻な状況に同居する笑いを、町田は逃さずにすくいとり、リズム感あふれる言葉でさらにふくらませてみせる。

 「逆水戸」は、テレビの時代劇好きという町田らしく、「水戸黄門」とおぼしき物語を下敷きにした時代小説。現代を離れ、江戸を舞台にしたこの小説に大笑いしながら全6編が終わる、という構成もいい。（門倉紫麻）

小説のフリージャズといった感のある「きれぎれ」よりはずっと読みやすい。　自分も嘘、自分以外の人もどこまで本当やら…というところはある意味勇気づけられる部分があります。『権現の踊り子』は数ページに渡って、主人公がつい乗せられて内面を如実に吐露してしまう部分があり、こういう事を（ここではそれが何であるかは言いません。是非読んでみましょう。）はっきり言ってくれるのはうれしい。　いわゆるインテリと呼ばれる人たちとは問題に対する切り口が絶対的に違うでしょう。　彼の作品を読むと、何もかもが曖昧になってゆき絶壁に立たされるような思いがします。

町田康の作品はどれを読んでも、主人公がじたばたする。何故じたばたするかというと、それは、主人公たちが“どこかへ辿り着こうとするからであって”その“どこか”というのが“自分以外の場所”だからだと思う。彼の作品に常に根底として流れているテーマは“結局自分は自分以外の何処にも逃れられない”と言う事で彼の目には世の人々のスタンスはそのように映るのだろう。そして、僕の目にもそう映る。だから、とても面白かった。彼を彼たらしめているのは、その悲しいテーマをユーモアを持って語るというところにあると思う。暗いテーマを明るいリズムに乗せて。彼のスタンスは、18歳パンクロッカーとしてデビューしたときとなんらの変わりなくその意志は持続している。

町田さんは天才、と言うよりもこの作風で走りぬけ、あちらこちらで賞を獲得しているところがスゴイ。言語の使い方に決まりはないけど、このわけわかんなさで賞。
でも絶対に、町田さんは書いている時に「ふくみ笑い」かどうかはわからないけど、自分アホだと一人で笑っている時があると思う。
