いわゆる下巻です。
韮山。全ての事象がその場所を示す。牽制しあういくつもの怪しげな団体。逮捕された小説家の関口はどうなるのか。答えを求めるべく、記者・鳥口や探偵見習い・益田たちも何もわからないながらも韮山へ向かいます。『宴の支度』で何かの存在は感じれるものの見えなかったことが、見事に繋がります。何年もかけた大きなとてつもないからくりが今、一つになり宴が始まろうとしています。誰が誰に誰を、そして何の為に……。

自分であるための確かな証拠、アイデンティティ。いつ形成され自己を確立するものなのでしょうか。人は母の胎内にいる時の記憶を持っていると言われます。覚えているものと覚えていないものから成り立つものの上に乗っている自己は非常にもろく崩れやすいのかもしれません。

通常、シリーズ物では出てくるのはほぼレギュラーメンバーのみで、そのまま最後までいってしまう。

しかし、このシリーズではレギュラーメンバー以外のゲストメンバー（その話にだけ出てくる人）も最後に勢ぞろいしてしまう！！

その効果あって、シリーズ全体がまるで一つの物語であるかのような、また、それまでのシリーズがすべて複線であったかのような錯覚をしてしまう。

物語的には人がたくさん出すぎていて、メモを取りながらでないとわかり辛いのがマイナス一点だけれど、このシリーズをはじめから読んでいる人は、これを読まないと終われない。そんな作品です。

京極堂シリーズはどれも読みどころがあって面白いのだが、この作品に関しては他の作品よりも数段落ちる出来栄えだと思う。まずシリーズ特有の薀蓄だが、これまでの作品では無関係に見えても実は関係があったたため、いつも非常に驚かされていたのだが、この作品に関しては無関係な薀蓄が多すぎる。重要なファクターである催眠術にしても、ちょっとご都合主義、というか今までの作品では例えご都合主義であってもそうとは感じさせない力があったが、この作品にはそれもない。京極堂シリーズの中では珍しく凡作という印象
