京極堂の「陰陽師」の「言霊」に対抗する、シリーズ最大の敵「禅宗」の「禅問答」。果たして、京極堂は「憑き物」を落とせるのか？
言葉の奔流によって、読むことの面白さが堪能できる「京極堂シリーズ」は、この本でひとつの頂点を迎えます。骨董屋「待古庵」と、１作目で登場した老医師「久遠寺」が、重要な役割を果たします。

１作目のインパクトがあまりにも強かったので、２~３作目は内容にかかわらず私にとっては刺激が足らなかったのですが・・・本作で払拭しました。
でも・・・またもや本が厚くなった・・・！。でも、厚さと面白さの比でいくと、本作が最高傑作かもしれません。

間違いなくこのシリーズ最高傑作といっても過言ではないだろう。

いつの間にか読み手である自分もまた『檻』に囚われている不思議な感覚を覚えた。

最初はページ数と謎かけのような導入部に圧倒されるかもしれないが、読み進めるうちに本の厚さはは次第に気にならなくなる。
そしてこの一連の事件の結末(というより顛末)を見届けるまでは頁を繰ることを止められなくなるはずだ。

京極堂のあざやかな憑き物落としも勿論健在だが、やはり見るべきは最大のテーマである『禅』の世界観であろう。
この作品と同様、頭で『理解』しようとすると魔境に陥ってしまうあたりも非常に興味深いものだ。

　京極夏彦の作品中で一番の完成度だと思う｡
　登場人物たちが一箇所に集められるいわゆる館物のためか、一作目の登場人物の行方が伏線とされて深みを加えているためか。
　京極夏彦の作品はミステリーになるのだろうか｡ジャンル分けはよくわからないが、焦点はトリックではない。

　この作品の面白みは、巧妙に張り巡らされた伏線にある。注意と知識さえあれば、かなり早い段階で犯人が特定できる。それは伏線が確りしている証拠。それが楽しいと思うか、予想通りすぎてつまらないと思うかは読むひと次第だが。

「拙僧が殺めたのだ」という最初の一行のインパクトもすごい。閉ざされた山の中で修行する僧たちの超然とした姿が崩れていくさまも面白い｡
