著者紹介

1918年京都府生まれ。1941年法政大学国漢科卒業。1943年早稲田大学文学部卒業。1952年立命館大学経済学部卒業。1958年京都大学教育学部留学。専攻は国文学。清風高校など高校教師を経て、滋賀文教短期大学教授、奈良芸術短期大学講師。著書に『続日本紀　上・中・下』（全現代語訳・学術文庫）がある。1992年没。

　『日本書紀』を難しいと感じているすべての人にオススメの１冊。

　本書は『日本書紀』の欽明天皇以降を現代語訳したものである。この時代は、蘇我氏の台頭と物部氏の没落、崇仏と古来の信仰との関係、聖徳太子、推古天皇と馬子、蝦夷暗殺、壬申の乱などなど、今なお古代史研究の源泉となっている問題が目白押し。にもかかわらず、実際に『日本書紀』を読むと、すっごくめんどくさい、…もとい、難解である(ああっ、本音がっ)。しかし本書の場合、そんな煩わしさとは無縁で、すいすい読めてしまう。こんな簡単に読めてしまっていいのだろうか…、と何やら妙な罪悪感を覚える始末…。とほほほほ…。

　無論、このまま読んでもいいと思うけれど、やはり岩波文庫版などと一緒に読み進めるのがベストだろう。現代語訳でどんどん読んでしまうと、本文では「要注意だ」と感じ取れる部分も、一気に読んでしまいかねない。古代史への興味からさらに一歩進んで、自分でもちょっと研究してみようかな、とか考えてる人は、やはり併読でしょう。

古事記は読んだことがあっても、日本書紀を読んだ人はなかなかいないのではないだろうか？説話的おもしろさに富んでいる古事記に比べて、いかにも官選歴史書的な日本書紀は確かに初めは非常に取っつきにくい。特に、日本書紀（上）の初めにある神代の記述は、複数の似通った伝承をもれなく記載しようとしていて、ここであきらめてしまう人も多いのではないか？しかしながら、日本書紀は中国・朝鮮との国交などについて詳しい記載があり、古事記とは異なった視点から古代日本を眺めることができる。特に下巻は、古事記に記載のない持統朝までの詳細な記述があり、特に壬申の乱の項では天武側の動勢が生き生きと活写されている。是非一度、通読されることを推奨します。

『日本書紀』『古事記』のいわゆる「記紀」の解説書から、邪馬台国の存在や大和朝廷の成立など古代日本史を扱った本は数多にあるが、とにかく基礎資料たる『日本書紀』を、全部読み通さなくても、せめて参照できるように手元において置かなければ正確な知識の習得はおぼつかない。講談社学術文庫のものは宇治谷孟氏による現代語訳で、文章がこなれて現代人が『日本書紀』を手に触れるのに打ってつけのハンディな文庫サイズの二巻本である。岩波文庫のものは原文版であるが、非常に詳細な注釈がついているので両者を併用すると便利かもしれない。日本古代史に関心がある人で、専門家や歴史愛好家の書いたものを読むだけで満足しているような人がいるが、まさに自分たちの歴史を学ぶのであるから、きちんと『古事記』『日本書紀』の原典に当たり、それから様々な関連書に目を通すという、まっとうな態度を心がけてこそ、正確な歴史認識を期すことができると思う。
