著者紹介

1918年京都府生まれ。1941年法政大学国漢科卒業。1943年早稲田大学文学部卒業。1952年立命館大学経済学部卒業。京都大学教育学部留学。国文学専攻。清風高校など高校教師を経て、滋賀文教短期大学教授。奈良芸術短期大学講師。著書に『続日本記　上・中・下』（全現代語訳・学術文庫）がある。1992年没。

『日本書紀』が現代日本語で読めるという素敵な文庫本です。
『古事記』よりも内容が豊富な割には従来あまり一般的には親しく読まれることの少なかった『日本書紀』が、本文庫では平易な現代語に訳されています。

　もちろん、もう少し注釈を施しておいて欲しかった等といった注文をつけることは出来ますが、袖珍本で『日本紀』の世界が気軽に楽しめるのですから、先ずは満足せねばなりませぬぞえ。
巻末の小見出し索引や下巻の年表・系図などの史料も結構役に立ってくれましょう程に。

　古代日本史に関心のある人も無い人も、神話伝説が好きな人も好きではない人も、どなたも挙って御一読あれかし。御損はありませぬぞ。

愛読書の一つ。原書で読んでも、本書は手放せない。ハンディで読みやすい現代語。ただ時々端より過ぎていることがある。肝心なことで結構汚いことや、奇態なことが、纏められて原文の語句をそのまま現代語に直していないところがある。次回改訳のときはぜひ、そういうところにも気を配って下さい。「日本書紀」は「古事記」に比べて人工的で、過去の雰囲気が伝わっていないことは宣長の時代からの有力な感想だが、僕はそうは思わなかった。為政者の脚色は或る程度仕方が無くそれは「古事記」も同じだ。むしろ、「あれ？なんでこんなことわざわざ書くのかな」と不思議に思うことが多く、著作者たちが、故意に後世に疑問を持たせ、隠蔽したことを気付かせるような「努力」とさえ言いたくなるような部分が随所にあって、わくわくする。そんな箇所は枚挙に暇が無いが、スサノオが異説によるとソオルに行って泥の船で帰ってくる所とか、いろいろある。それと崇神天皇以前は作り物とよく言われるが、案外に事実が詳細でにわかに作り物とは信じがたい物が多い。それとしばしば古代日本の支配層と朝鮮との同一性を主張する向きもあるが、初期の頃から明らかにグループが異なることがそれとなく分かり、後半になると「韓語で話した」と断っているように完全に異人種扱いである。深い関わりが隠蔽されているとしても、意外と思っているよりは距離があるのかもしれない。兎に角随所に興味尽きない箇所が多い。

　『日本書紀』の全訳です。とにかく読みやすい。『古事記』を読んで興味はあるけど難しそう、長い、漢文を読むのは苦手…、という方にはホント、オススメです。また岩波文庫版など、本格的に『日本書紀』を読むときなんて、手元にあると大助かり。どう訳したらいいのか分からない時も、本書を開けばすぐ解決します。個人的には岩波文庫版を読みながら、難しい語句や難解な箇所にぶつかったら、まず岩波文庫の註や補注を参照しつつ、本書で訳を確かめるというやり方がオススメです。理解度アップ間違いなし。…やや、お金と時間のかかる読み方ですが。
