著者紹介

1927年神奈川県生まれ。東京陸軍幼年学校、陸軍予科士官学校を経て、駒沢大学仏教学部卒業。東京大学大学院博士課程修了。東京大学教授を経て、現在東京大学名誉教授、愛知学院大学教授。文学博士。専攻は中国仏教史・華厳教学。学士院賞受賞。天道流合気道5段。著書に『中国仏教史』『仏陀の観たもの』『禅とはなにか』『八宗綱要』『天台思想入門』『華厳の思想』『般若心経講話』『中国の禅』などがある。

本書は宮本武蔵の、時代と国を超えて読み継がれる名著「五輪書」に鎌田茂雄氏が現代語訳と解説を付した本です。

本書は各社から出ている五輪書の中でも、読者への親切心に最も満ちた1冊でしょう。五輪書は「地之巻」「水之巻」「火の巻」「風の巻」「空の巻」の5巻で構成されていますが、それぞれの巻で各段落ごとに現代語訳が挿入されています。気軽に読み易く、現代語訳は極めて明晰です。

解説を要する箇所には「付記」があり、そこで鎌田氏の鋭い考察が展開されています。それを読むと、何故五輪書が人生やビジネスの分野でも注目されてきたかが、現代語訳の読解よりも更に分かりやすく実感できるようになっています。

本書は「兵法三十五箇条」と「独行道」も併せて収録しています。ただこれらについては代語訳が無く、本書の欠点となっています。それを除けば、本書は五輪書読解に非常に適しています。五輪書初心者にお勧めです。

宮本武蔵の人生哲学が書かれていると、勝手に思い込んでいました。でも、書かれているのは本当に剣の道なんです。たとえば五つの基本形について、「第一のかまえは、中段をとり、太刀の先を敵の顔につける」など。剣の実用書ですよ。敵がいることを前提として書かれているので、自分自身との戦いにどう勝つか……なんてことのヒントにはなりにくいです（そんなことをこの本に求めた私がバカだったのかもしれない）。ただ、一つうなずけたのは、「修行が未熟なうちは、よい技をしよう、うまく動こうと思うからかえってできなくなる」という箇所。これって何事にも言えることですよね。「五輪書を読む」ということに関しては、訳文も詳しいしおすすめできます。ただ、五輪書を人生哲学書だと思うと失敗しますよという……（そんなこと思うの私だけか）。教養にはなりました。

　宮本武蔵の名高い本書をはじめて　この文庫でじっくり読んでみた。

　読んで分かったことだが　この本は本当に剣法を具体的、実際的に丁寧に教えているKNOW-HOW本である。精神論でもなく　思想書でもなく　ひたすら　「足の使い方」だの「刀の持ち方」だのが　説かれている。その意味では現代の「＊＊の達人」であるとか「料理読本」等といった本と基本的な性格は同じであると　思い切って言ってしまおう。

　但し、ではある。

　「細部に神は宿る」とはキリスト教の言葉だが　まさしく　その言葉を思い出させるものが　この本にある。自分の「天職」を「極私的」に「目を凝らしていく」うちに　思いがけなく普遍的な視野が得られるということは　武蔵だけではなく　先達の諸賢の方々にも共通して見られた現象である。その良例は本書からいくらでも引用できる。

「遠き所を近く見、ちかき所を遠くに見る事、兵法の専也」

これは　剣法において　「相手の遠いところをしっかり見る一方　目先の動きには捉われるな」という事を当たり前のように言っているだけだが　実に普遍的な内容ではないかと思う。武蔵は　そんな感心している僕を見たとしたら「いったい何に感心しているのだ？」と首をひねるかもしれないが　そんなものである。　その意味で　この「五輪書」が４００年という歳月に耐えて　今なお　多くの人の興味と共感を集めていることに　あの世の武蔵も呆れているかもしれない。
