1909年東京生まれ。1933年東京帝国大学文学部卒業。上代日本文学専攻。お茶の水女子大学名誉教授。著書に『万葉集講説』『日本神話の構成』、論文に「豊玉姫神話と黄泉国神話」「天語歌と纒向の日代の宮」など。1983年11月15日没。

古代史に関する文献を渉猟するうち、古事記を読んでみたいと思って読み始めた。本書は古事記上巻（神代）をあつかっており、神話の世界の日本の神々は実に人間味にあふれていたことがよくわかる。古事記入門書の好書である。

戦後、ましてオイルショック後世代の僕らにあっては
「天の岩戸」「ヤマタノオロチ」「因幡の白兎」等の説話を断片的に
知っているのみ、というのが大方のところである。

では真面目にこの「ふることぶみ」に触れてみようと思っても、
古語で編まれたその原文の表現や神々の名前はあまりに難解、
読めたとしても前提知識なしに正しく意味まで理解できるものではない。
当然注釈、願わくば現代語訳が欲しいと思うわけだが、この講談社学術文庫版の古事記は
その要請に応えてくれる一冊である。

１．原文は書き下し文に書き改め、
２．適宜章段に区切り、
３．章ごとに注釈をつけ
４．現代文の訳を付加する

といった編集方法となっているので、日本神話に対する前提知識がなくとも、ここから入って行ける。
現代語訳をただ読み飛ばすだけでも面白いが、注釈を丹念に追って行けば、
一見荒唐無稽に見える説話でも、その成立の背景が見えてくる。
民俗学の本などと併せて読むには持って来いの一冊で、
古事記に対する理解を深める入り口としては最適と言えるだろう。
この書を読む上で重要なことは、その説話の内容はもとより、
その成立の背景や、それらが大和朝廷により取捨選択され、
「古事記」として編纂されてきた理由なのだと思う。

上巻では、イザナギ・イザナミによる国生みから、いわゆる海幸山幸の説話までを収録。

講談社学術文庫の三巻本『古事記』である原文と全訳注のついた親切な編集で、本格的な古代史研究にも利用できるし、日本神話を語った文学ジャンルとしての古代文学の読み物としてもオススメである。原文をまとまった内容ごとに区切って書き下し文に全訳注を添えるといった構成である。『古事記』は『日本書紀』と比べるとシンプルなので手が出しやすいと思う。古文が苦手の方でもこの学術文庫版なら気楽に「古事記入門」が出来る。
