1905年東京生まれ。東京大学文学部心理学科卒業。お茶の水女子大学教授、同大学学長をへて、現在、同大学名誉教授。著書に「文章心理学大系」（全6巻）「子どもの認識と感情」、訳書にピアジェ「人間科学序説」など。
