数ある聖書の和訳の中で、私がわざわざバルバロ氏の翻訳を求めたのは、同氏の訳になる「キリストにならう」を読んだからだ。宗教書は聖典である。単に意味として訳が学問的に正確だというだけでは不足、文体が大切だ。訳者の日本語には翻訳臭さや拙さが無く、かつ宗教的な敬虔さに溢れている。訳者がイタリア人であることを考え合わせれば、この訳にいたるまでにどれほどの苦労と愛とが必要であったかが想像される。所々簡単な挿絵や細かい注が入っているが、これもうるさくなく、緊張の伴いがちな読書という作業の中、少し寄り道して景色を眺めるような息抜きになる。

簡潔でわかりやすく、かつ威厳のある文章。カトリック公認。固有名詞が一般的な聖書と異なっていたり、翻訳の専門的な立場から見ると問題点も多いようだが、カトリック神父が書いたものであるので、キリスト教の教義から外れることはない。理解の手助けに十分な詳しい注解もいい。他の聖書ではただ字面を追うことにとらわれていたが、きちんと理解するにはこのくらいの注解が必要だろうと思う。自分にあった聖書をと思い、今までにいくつか買い換えたが、結局このバルバロ訳に落ち着きそうだ。

丁寧な注釈と豊富な図柄は、宣伝文句のとおりで、私の様な非キリスト教徒の者にすら人生への一瞥を与えるに十分な図書です。　明らかに興味本位で購入・読書したものの、その懐の深さに人類最大のベストセラーとしての書物であることを思い知らされ、今後の読書遍歴に多大な影響を及ぼすこと間違いありません。　この訳者の深い宗教的洞察なくては、このような奇跡的な「バイブル」がこの国に出でることはなかったこととおもいます。　ただただ感嘆するのみです。
