自閉症の子ども達と関わる中で、どうしても分からなかったことは、彼らにも心があるのか、人との関わりを求めているのかということだった。本書はまさにその答えを与えてくれた。著者は6歳時に自閉症と診断されて以来「どこか普通の人とは違う」ことに気づきながら、どこがどう違い、どこをどう変えればいいのかを深く悩み苦しみながら大人へと成長してきた。上手に人付き合いをしたくても、その方法が分からず不安に陥りパニック症状を起こす。そうした一見奇異な行動こそが、彼女の心の表現であることに気づかされたのだ。現在は動物科学博士として活躍する著者が、科学者の視点で自己の障害を語った印象的な著書。アスペルガー障害の正しい認知のためにも役立つだろう。

題名がなんだか物々しくて敬遠していましたが、同著者の「自閉症の才能開発」が面白かったのでこちらも読みました。
他の自閉症者の書いた本は読者の私も辛くなり、子供への対応について躊躇し暗い気持ちになりましたが、この本は未来と希望が見えてきて保護者である私の気持ちを楽にしてくれました。

著者であるテンプルさんは周りの人にも恵まれていましたね。母親の手紙の内容が公開されていますが、深い愛と娘の成長を信じる心、理解がにじみ出ていました。
教師や自閉症の息子さんをもった医学博士、ファミリーに見守られながらも自力で色々な問題を解決し成長していこうとする意思がありました。

そしてこの本は読みやすい、面白い、疲れない。
それなのにここから学ぶものはかなりある。

この人は自閉症でありながら専門的なことも持ち前のこだわりでかなり研究していますので医学的な記述も載せられています。それも解り易く。
自分で体験している感覚を医学的な部分からも見ているわけですから予測と実験ができているということになりますよね。
障害は人によって違いますけど、どんな部分に弱さがあるのかを見極める参考にはなると思います。

アスペルガー症候群に関して何冊か読んでいるうちにみつけた本です。「娘がそうかもしれない…」自閉症に関して誤解し、理解を深めつつあった私(母)ですが、この本をよんで衝撃をうけました。私自身、とても共感したのです。成人した自閉症スペクトラムの方々が本で自身の障害に気づく事が多いと聞きましたが、そのとおりでした。まわりにいた、ちょっと変わった子(人)、とっつきにくい子(人)、まわりとは何か自分は違う?相手を自分を「理解」するためにぜひ読んでみていただきたいです。この自閉症スペクトラムは障害ですが(心の病気ではありません)愛情と気づきによって「個性」に変わります!テンプルさんの輝きをこの本で感じてください。
