TV版でも人気だったシリーズ「カルマ編」が登場！THE ORIGINでは
今後も納得できるストーリーを希望します。

大気圏突入前後というのはアニメ版やその後のZガンダム等でも必ずといっていいほど描かれる戦闘ポイントだが、本巻の前半は突入間際の数分間に賭けてホワイトベースに戦闘を挑むシャアが描かれる（この決断力、大胆さ！）。著者は、これをアニメよりもさらに緊迫感のあるシーンに描きあげた。ホワイトベースを地表で待ち受けるガルマの描き方も秀逸。人間ドラマをきちんと描きこむ、著者の本領発揮で、ガルマとシャアの微妙な関係を描く。
ストーリーはテレビ版にほとんど沿っているにも関わらず、１ページ１ページをドキドキさせながら読ませていく著者の力量に感服。すばらしい。

第3巻では連邦軍本部を目指し地球に降下したホワイトベースのアメリカ西海岸における戦いを描く。

これでもかと執拗に続くシャアの追撃。
かれこれサイド7脱出時からであるから、相当な執念である。
継続こそが力とはいうけれど、なかなか報われないシャアに少なからず同情すらしてしまう。
とはいえ、結果的に復讐の第一歩を（次巻で）記すことができるのだから、あながち無駄でもないのだけれど・・・。

こうまで戦いが続くと補給とか修理とか福利厚生とかの面で問題が出てくるものである。
実際に避難民が不穏な動きを見せ始めるし、クルーの間にも不協和音が目立つようになってくる。
むろん管理職であるブライトはじめとする士官は胃が痛いに違いない。
それでも組織としてなんとかまとまりを維持できたのは、ひとえに死にたくないという気持ちなのではないだろうか。
さすがに少年アニメが原作なだけあって、生死というリアルな描写はないのだが、アニメに比べるとそういう観点での描写は多少増えたような気がした。
