　第27回文藝賞＆第105回直木賞W受賞作品。

　四国の田舎でロックに目覚めた高校生が仲間達と共にバンドを組み、ロックに明け暮れる。

　仲間達との友情、高校生ならではの背中がかゆくなるような恋愛、青春ならではの溢れんばかりの活力等々について、一つの高校生バンドの活動を通して綴られています。

　また、1960年代の洋楽の名前が所狭しと登場します。不朽の名曲ばかり。その名前を見ているだけでもワクワクします。そして、久しぶりにそれらを聞いてみたくなるでしょう。

　｢青春時代｣を経験しない方はいないと思います。本書では“｢青春時代｣がいつなのかということはその人の心が決める”ということを教えてくれているような気がしました。
　たとえ50歳になろうと80歳になろうと、その人が“今こそ｢青春時代｣”と思えば、それはまさしく｢青春時代｣なのです。

　これから｢青春時代｣を迎えるという人も、今まさに｢青春時代｣だという人も、｢青春時代｣なんてとっくの昔に過ぎ去ったと思っている人も、是非本書を手に取ってみてください。

四国観音寺で生活する高校生たちが、ベンチャーズにあこがれてバンドを結成し、その活動を通して友達と心をふれあい、友情を深めていく様子がとても「直球」で描かれてます。私も、高校の時エレキギターを買って、バンドのまねごとをしてましたので、とても呼んでいて懐かしかった。はじめに映画を見た後に読みましたが、そのノスタルジックな感じは同質なものでした。気持ちが晴れないとき、時々読み返してにやにやしてます。

名作「青春デンデケデケデケ」のオリジナル版。河出書房で刊行され、直木賞を受賞したのは、文藝賞応募のため約半分に短縮されたバージョンである。作者は授賞してくれた委員や読者を慮ってか、あえて「完璧版」という言葉は使ってない。ところがどっこい、恐らく後世に残るのはこちらであろう。確かにテンポの良さは劣るが、饒舌が徹底しているぶん魅力的なのだ。たとえば、三島敏夫というムード歌謡曲の歌手について二十頁も費やして語っている部分、本筋ともロックとも何の関係もない余談なのだが、この部分の面白さといったらどうだ。河出版では削られたエピソードもみな楽しい。特に主人公が年上のパートさんに誘惑されかかる話のおかしさ、切なさ。ここだけでも、新たに「私家版」を買う値打ちがある。
