この本を読んでから、かれこれ１５年の歳月が流れました。
改めて読み返して、やっぱりシャーリーは凄いと思います。
世界的に有名な女優が「精神世界」と言う、
一種偏見を伴いかねない世界を世間に堂々と知らしめたのですから。
彼女が精神世界にひかれて行く時の心の葛藤や考え方に
自分の１５年を振り返って、重なる点が多くあったのも興味深いです。
そして、今になって「そうだったのか」とわかった部分もありました。
誰もが、その人のペースで学んでいくとシャーリーは語っています。
この本を手にした事が、その人の学びの始まりになる・・・
そんな気がしています。

この本は１０年以上前に読みました。その時はとても感動したのを覚えています。まず初めの「日本の読者の皆様へ」に書かれている、「じつはこの世に現実などほんとうは存在しない」とか「自分こそが自分の先生であり、あなた自身が神である。」という言葉は本当に衝撃的でした。現実に起きている出来事は、私たちがそれをどう受け止めているかという認識の問題だと言っています。つまり私たちは環境の奴隷などではなく、環境を支配し得る存在だということを示唆しています。

この本は不倫から始まり、やがて精神世界と出会い、体外離脱やＵＦＯと遭遇して、最後に「アウト・オン・ア・リム」という言葉に隠された驚愕の真実を知ることになります。すごくドラマチックなので本当に体験したのか疑いたくなる場面もありますが、あまり偏見を持たないほうがいいでしょう。シャーリー・マクレーンの経験は、私たちに深い真理を教えてくれているのかもしれません。精神世界の入門書には最高の一冊だと思います。

「アウト・オン・ア・リム」は私が精神世界やニューエイジの考え方に興味を持つきっかけになった本です。精神世界がなんであるかを解説しているというより、著者であるシャーリー・マクレーンが、身の回りで起こり始めた出来事を通して、「究極の真実」に気付き始めるプロセスを赤裸々に描いているフィクションです。女優として地位も名声も得ている彼女にとって、こういった類の本を出版するというのは、相当の勇気が必要だったでしょうし、その後のバッシングもすごかったのではと想像できます。ストーリー的にも興味深く（特に女性には）、非常に読みやすいので、ぜひ精神世界初心者の方に読んでいただきたいです。ちなみに、この作品に影響を受けた人は私の周りにも何人かいて有意義で興味深い人生を送っていますし、著名人と呼ばれる人の中にもそういった人たちが少なからずいるようです。
