９９の死を一気に間近で見たような気分になりました。どんな生き方をしていようと、死に対してどんな思いを抱いていようと、死（死の瞬間）は静かなものなのですね。

一体自分が死ぬときってどんななんだろう？　それはいつ来るんだろう？　今生きていることが不思議なような、将来なんて幻のような、ぞわっと不吉な気分にさせられました。

手塚治虫さんの死は壮絶です。身を削って、命を削って後世にメッセージを残した方なんだと思いました。

生きているこの今の時間を完全燃焼させなければ……と、じわりと重く感じさせてくれる本です。

確かにあとがきで荒俣が強調するように、生前も去ることながら死に際こそがその人の本分が出るようで面白いわけです。この本は多分荒俣の指名した人物の資料を編集者が集めてきてまとめるというスタイルをとっているようで、一人一人についての記述は普通は2Pと人数勝負の本ですね。

だから関心を持った人物については自身で別の機会に詳しい本でも読むといいでしょう。ただ永井荷風やシブタツなど注目に値するとされた知識人は、10pと別稿扱いで個別の執筆者がコメントをよせたりしています。
基本的には寝る前とか電車の中とか、コンビニに売ってる雑学本の高級品として読むのがちょうどいいのでは。

「死」が恐ろしいのではなく、「死」の周りにいるというあたりまえの事実に驚愕しました。

夜一人で読むとその辺のホラーより怖いです。
