この絵本は浜田広介の原作をそのまま載せてるのが特徴です。
現在出版されている他の「泣いた赤おに」とはひと味もふた味も違います。
原作は短編小説ほどの長さで、ふつうの絵本とくらべると長めですが、
そのぶん物語の情景や赤おにの心の動き・悲しみがしみじみと伝わってきます。
そして、もうひとつ特徴的なのが梶山俊夫の力強く独創的な挿し絵。
物語をより趣深いものにしています。
大人になっても読み直したい、絵本の中の名作といって良いでしょう。

自分の子供時代に一番好きだったお話がこれ。
人から愛されたい、しかし、赤鬼という姿ゆえ村人から恐れられる悲しさ。
青鬼のおかげで村人からの信用を手にするも失ったものはそれより大きいことを知り泣いた赤鬼。
あらすじを話すだけでも泣けてきます。

私が「友情」という壁にぶつかり、苦しんでいたとき、この本に出会いました。外側だけの、人目には美しく見える「友情」ではなく、友情の中にある、本物の美しさ、純粋さを教えられ感動の涙を流しました。私にとって大切な大切な絵本です！
