渡部直己『不敬文学論序説』の文庫本にだけ付いている補説で、妙に評価が高いので文庫化を気に読んでみました。渡部氏は作中の田宮家と天皇家の系図的相関関係を元に、この本を「不敬」な天皇小説として評価しているらしい。なるほど、『ニッポニア・ニッポン』も書いていた。
たしかにここにはスガ秀実氏いうところの「偽史的想像力」たっぷりだし、戦後日本の権力のありさまが批判的に描かれてもいる。しかし強調されているのは、その『視覚』的な側面。「見る−見られる」という弁証法的関係に留まらず、監視、盗撮、幻覚、現実から目を逸らすこと、見たくないものが見えること、映像にだけ欲情すること、などなどといった「見ることの変奏」が奏でられている。それは、耳や鼻はともかく目だけは失いたくない、という拷問される者に象徴的に描かれるが、登場人物は全員、いわば『視覚』的な人間で、おどろくほど見ることにこだわっているのだ。
これは天皇制なんていう、もう抜け殻でしかないことよりもずっと重要な、「見ないという選択肢がない」という現代的な権力の問題だと思いますが、いかに？

著者の小説は『アメリカの夜』以来ずっと読み続けてきている。
正直な感想は、そんなにすごいのか、ということだった。
阿部の作風は「知的武装したスラップスティック」とも
呼べるものだ。だがこの「知的武装」のほうが、ハスミとか
批評空間あたりを意識しているのがみえみえで、たとえば
「ABC戦争」で「エクリチュール」なんて言葉が出てくると、
もういけない、ということになる。

本作にもあざといガジェットは色々とある。
パン、小麦粉、麻薬、米国、占領軍の話は
興味深いが、別にこの小説で読まなくても
いいように思う。
だが、地方の陰湿な利益共同体が、一部の人物の
「退屈」と「倦怠」から崩壊していく様を
ドタバタとして描き切る著者の筆力が勝り、
読者としては飽きずに最後まで読める。
阿部には、もうオシャレなんてせずに、この路線で
どんどん書いてもらいたい。

人物を描く小説は多いけれど、一人一人の人間で町を描き出し、その町に生きる
人を再びクローズアップさせている。
町の歴史と登場人物が持つ性格・位置付けが重層的に織りこまれ、作品に緊張感
を与えていて長い作品なのに読む側を飽きさせない。
難しいことは考えずに、おもしろい。壮大な構想に、筆力が追いついている。
いろいろな角度で読むことが出来るだろうけれど、傑作だと思う。
