　この本は六十年代のアメリカがいかにしてベトナム戦争に介入していったのか、軍、政治家、大統領、エスタブリッシュメントと呼ばれる集団、さまざまな立場から描かれたとても有名ですばらしい本です。著者は、D.ハルバースタムですが、翻訳者、浅野さんの訳も何の違和感も無く60年代の歴史に没頭できます。ベトナム戦争やケネディのことを知りたい方、アメリカの政治やシステムを知りたい方、ぜひお読みください。ただしダラスのことや、オズワルドのことには一言も触れられていなくその辺の徹底した無視の仕方が、逆にとても新鮮な感じがしました。
　上巻では、ケネディ大統領誕生から、軍事顧問団をベトナムに派遣するまでが書かれています。

今日のイラク戦争の泥沼化を見るにつけ、「ベトナムで懲りるはずではなかったか？」との思いから偶然手に取った本著ですが、期待を上回る出来映えと言わざるを得ません。ベトナムでの米国の壮大な失敗は決して偶然でもなんでもなく、失敗を運命付けられたような気がいたします。
政策参画者たちの自己保身や野心や虚偽はなにも米国に限った話ではありません。

本著の卓抜な人物造形には目を見張るものがあります。

なお、訳文は流麗な名訳と称するに相応しいと思います。

「ベスト＆ブライテスト」とは、ケネディとジョンソン政権において国家安全保障を担当し“最良にして最も聡明”と謳われたエリートたちのことである。合理主義で行動的、実行力に富んだ彼らが、のちに“賢者の愚行”と評されることになるベトナム戦争へと突き進んでいったのは、なぜなのか。本書では、大統領になったＪ・Ｆ・ケネディが輝ける経歴を誇る面々を招集するプロセスと、彼らが直面した大きな課題〜キューバ危機と中国の崩壊〜を通して、ベトナムへの軍事介入への“奈落へ向かう渦巻き”へ巻き込まれていく道程が描かれる。

著者はいう。
---３回にわたって連載された記事の表題・・・「われわれはなぜ中国を失ったか」は心にとめておく価値がある。中国はわれわれのものなのだった。失うべき何物かであった。そしてこの前提こそ、その後何年にもわたって外交政策決定者の心をむしばむのである。---

アメリカは今も、何物かを失うまいとして戦い続けている。ベトナム戦争当時と国際情勢は大きく異なっているが、そのには現代にまで引き継がれた共通の態度…私が感じるところでは「世界をコントロールしようとする傲慢さ」…がある。当時権力の座にいたエリートたちの姿をイキイキと描きながら、その影に潜む傲慢さを暴き出す渾身のレポート。
