日経BPのレビューには「ややほめすぎ」とあるが、別にブログをほめることが本書の趣旨ではない。
「ブログを初めとするテクノロジーにより、今まで莫大な投資をしなければできなかったニュースを発信するという行為が、誰でもできるようになった、その環境変化をうけ、ニュースを発信してきたメディア、そのニュースを読んでいた一般市民、取材対象となる人の関係がどのように変化していくのか」
というジャーナリズム論について、豊富な実例を踏まえて論じられている。

実例が多い半面、その実例から導き出される「締めの一言」のような強いメッセージが少ないため、読むに少々骨がおれた。

下記のような方には、お勧めの一冊。
・「ブログ？ただのWEB上のお手軽日記システムのことじゃないの？」と思っている方
・「テクノロジーの進歩がジャーナリズムにどのような影響を今後及ぼすか？」という点に興味がある方
・ブログ、ウィキ、RSSなどのテクノロジーがここ数年で社会にどのような影響を及ぼしたかという歴史を整理したい方

　最初に気をつけないといけないのは、本書はブログに関する本ではなくて、ジャーナリズムに関する本だという点だ。

　ブログだけに限らずBBSやウィキ、メーリングリスト、携帯メール等の主にインターネットを利用した情報発信が手軽に行えるようになった結果、今まで一読者でしかなかった人々が言わばプチジャーナリストとして活動できるようになり、既存のメディアでは成し得なかった報道が可能になり、ジャーナリズムの新たな局面が訪れる。著者の主張は要約するとこんな内容だ。確かに、その分析は的を射ているように思う。
　
　ただ、個人の情報発信が手軽に出来るようになったことに対する負の側面、あるいは著作権の侵害といった問題について、著者はあまりに楽観的過ぎると思う、取材対象者のプライバシー、ニュースの正確さ、著作権侵害、これらの問題について十分な考察がなされているとは思えない。言論の自由との兼ね合いも合って難しい問題だが、著者の意見はあまりにも言論の自由に偏り過ぎているように思える。

　本書はブログというネットワークツールを通じて、新しいメディアのあり方とそれを取り巻く諸問題を提起し、これからのジャーナリズムのあり方を問いかける一冊です。
　本書はジャーナリズムやインターネットの歴史と、ブログやウィキなどの新しいネットワークツールの紹介から始まります。それらのネットワークツールの進歩のおかげで、今までの取材対象者が取材をする側に変化していることを克明に描き、そのような流れを受けて、新しいジャーナリズムのあり方を考察しています
　しかし、一方でインターネットにおける政府や巨大企業の抑圧や検閲、著作権による囲い込みも始まっています。人類の普遍的な原理である、「言論の自由」をいかに実現するか。著者は問題提起をし、解決のための糸口を投げかけています。
　本書はあくまで、現在アメリカで起こっている事柄の兆候を捉えた、テクノロジーとジャーナリズムについての「予測」に過ぎません。しかし、人権思想に基づいた「ジャーナリズムの倫理」と言うべきものを一貫して貫いている本書は、後に続くであろう我々が安心して参照できるものであると思います。また、ブログに限らず目覚ましい発展を遂げているインターネット関連技術をどう使うのか、そのための羅針盤ともなりうるでしょう。
　技術論から見た倫理の書と言える本です。
