「戯作三昧」は青年芥川が自らをこうありたいとの思いで書いたのだと思います。
勧善懲悪（褒めています）の「南総里見八犬伝」を私は今呼んでいるところですが、それを書きつづる馬琴が（芥川が）心を動かされる馬琴の孫の言葉。
「浅草の観音様がそういったの」
観音様がどう言ったのかは実際に手にとって読んでください。

もちろん「地獄変」も名作ですよ。
